Hello forum,

My 53'' SONY XBR45 set is about 7 years old. It worked great until recently.

We had to gently move the set around living and dining rooms during home remodeling project. The TV set was civered with plastic and soft paddind to prevent and possibility of duct getting inside. When we completed the renovation and put the unit to its regula place we noticed some yellow/blue ghosting around images on the left part of the screen.

Has anyone encountered similar issues? Could it be problem with blue gun ?

Thank you very much to all in advance.

I would be willing to bet that this is an older CRT rear projection set. I would also bet that during storage for the renovation you had a speaker or some other type of magnetic device around the TV. I would say just do a degaus might even have a degaus on the front of the set. If I am incorrect im sorry about that but I think I am giving you a good guess!

Hello AVDesignPro,

It is rear projection unit. We bought it in 1998 brand new from Circuit City. During our renovation there were no magnatic or any speakers near the unit. My B&W 803D speakers were covered and stored in special safe location :-)

I think this yello/blue shadow might be caused by moving this unit around. We tried to be very gentle, but maybe something got out of allingment.

Do you think by reseting factory default might fix this problem?

I beleive you got the lenses and mirror dirty. Even though you tried to avoid this if you did any drywall work you got dust in the set. Clean the set properly and it should remedy the problem. I see this problem all the time in smokers' houses. I would also check the convergence. Better yet trash it and go buy a sexy new DLP. That is all the excuse you need. Just my 2 cents....

Most likely you'll need to converge your CRT's, simply meaning your red, blue, and green guns are all firing in the right spot. Takes a bit a patience to get it all right, and a cleaning cant hurt either.

Since all of this is based on assumption not knowing for sure I think all 3 of us are on the right track. What leads me to believe it is magnetic related is the fact that it was covered and sitting static. I have never seen a RPTV go out of alignment simply buy moving it. However there is thermal drift which is inherent with CRTs so the menu driven alignment is definately in the cards. Try that first and see if that doesn't fix it. It is in the menu setup somewhere trust me! Also I would be willing to bet that CCD is right also and your lenses and mirror are very dirty and I am sure that is a result of the renovation as well as the years you have had it so either clean it yourself or have someone else come and do it. All that said I am still going with my original assumption that it is magnetic and I am basing that on the fact that you say the misalignment is confined to the left portion of the screen. Hell we could all be wrong...this is consumer electronics ya never know what might happen!

Hello guys,

Thank you all for your responces. By removation I simply meant putting up new wallapaper. paint the ceiling and installing new hardwood flooring instead of carpet. No drywall job was done near my TV set. The screen of the TV set was covered with several new beach towels and the set itself was covered with protective plastic to prevent any dust getting inside.

Sometimes when my unit works for a while this blye/yellow shadow goes away, but when I trurn it on next day problem shows up again.

Here's what I did last night, but it didn't fix the problem. I went to Menu/Set up/Converge. (There are only 2 available adjustements for Red and Blue guns). After 15 minutes of adjustements I still get blue shadow on the left part of the screen. The right part looks good.

How do I do cleaning of the lens and the inside guts?
Any ideas would be apprecicated.

Thank you

The mirror or the screen are no longer aligned where they should be, that would explain the left side misalignment!

By the way this is a fun game!

My tech would tell you it is the convergence board has gone out. I think you have to look at all the possibilities we listed. If you made any dust I promise some has made it's way inside but it would not come and go as you described. My tech may be right for once on this one. I would still have someone pop the front and check for obvious loose mirror or dust dirt etc.

Now anyone have any chest pains that need a diagnosis? We are on a roll. I am not a repair tech but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Good morning guys,

Thank you very much for sharinf your knowlege with me. Yesterday, I used the official SONY Adjustement manual for XBR45 model to reset many of those values to factory average numbers. After 20 minuts of entering new data on the service screen, the picture looks better, but still out of allingment a little bit on the. The problem is when all 3 images (G,B,R) allinged perfectly fine on the right side, image goes out of balance on the left side and vise versa.

I guess it's time to call SONY tech. Do you have any idea how much this service call might cost me?

Thanks

$300-400. That is what my guy usually charges. Remember that is about what the set is worth.....

There should be two separate kinds of convergence; one is the single crosshatch in the center of the screen, the other different crosshatches at different places, or a grid with the ability to adjust different locations.

If you can only adjust the single crosshatch, you will never be able to adjust one side of the screen. If there is a way to get the other ones up, you will be able to adjust smaller areas of the screen, so you could align the left without messing up the middle and the right.

If the adjustments are done with the remote, fine. If there is a PC Board with some twenty or so colored knobs, be sure you have the service manual, read the entire thing three times and be sure you understand the order in which to do things, then don't leave out a single step.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Ernie Bornn-Gilman,

Thank you very much for your help. My problem was with 2 convergence black chips ( don't remember the part#). A repairman replaced then for $275 (total including tax).

But....I modified the factory setting and didn't save them. I am an idiot. Now I can't allign R,G and B together. I used Sony Adjustement manual (read it 10 times), but still no luck. I am close, very close, but still some lines are off.

Does anyone have any tricks how to re-allign R,B and G together. I use special DVD that display vertical and horizontal lines.

Thank you all in advance.
