Hi everyone,

I've been reviewing the Gold In-Room Monitors & Mini Monitors for an upcoming article, and they are amazing!

I was kind of surprised that the Triad subs didn't have an auto-sense signal circuit for start-up and shutdown. I know there are a number of ways to automatically turn them on, but I was wondering how you folks address the issue?

I'm not a huge fan of the Monster power products. I love the Panamax stuff but they don't have any SKU's with a trigger for under $350. Most receivers' switchable outlets aren't designed to handle more than 150 watts.

Why turn them off at all? They aren't drawing power unless the system is playing. When the system is on the sub makes sound. When the system is off, it doesn't. It has never even occurred to me it was an "issue" that needed to be addressed :-).

I felt the heat sink on a gold sub this morning (after the system was off all night) and it was pretty warm - not hot though. The sub was installed in a well-ventilated closet.

I got the impression from one of the Triad tech support guys that if the sub was sitting in a very small cabinet with no ventilation, I shouldn't leave it on all the time.

Have you ever had a problem with a Triad sub in a small enclosure?

Thanks,

Dawn

We use the rack amp 100% of the time...

I have placed their subs in cabinets, in-wall, in-ceiling, and freestanding, and always kept the amp with the equipment and out of harms way.

If the project does not include a rack, you can take the ears off and place it on a component shelf if the depth is OK (although it's really no deeper than most receviers).

We do use them in rackmount, and we pay close attention to the design the racks to ensure adequate cooling of all of the components.

That's the beautiful thing about Triad, I don't HAVE to have the amp on the back of the enclosure...

- I don't have to worry about heat.
- I don't have to worry about running a power cord to the sub.
- I never have to worry that the outlet feeding the sub is on a different phase or a being in a ground loop with the curcuit feeding the equipment (because my rack amps are on the same line conditioner as the rest of the equipment).

No hum, ever.

2nd Rick,

Thanks for the info. Between you and Fred (who called a few minutes ago to tell me about the Panamax M8HC-Pro) it looks like I'm covered either way.

Yes, I was totally blown away by the Gold Monitors. I can only imagine what the Platinum's must sound like. Have you ever heard those?

LCRs are a slightly lesser class than the Monitor class. Platinums are the best LCRs available, but the Monitors are a slightly more refined class of products. There are currently no Platinum Monitors...

The Platinum LCRs do share the same Revelator midrange drivers, but the tweeters are not of the same caliber, and I am assuming that the crossover is probaby not quite at the same caliber.

The Platinum LCRs are great speakers, but they prefer a LOT of power.

Triad is wonderful product. We installed a set for a famous BEER GUY a couple of years ago, and they were thrilled with the product.

We used the InRoom LCRs and Inwall Silver sub.

My wife saw the job and liked it, if I ever come home with it she will kill me. She also saw the invoice.

Triad might be the best company in the business.

I'm going to tour the factory on Thursday. This new dealer is pretty excited to see the operation - and maybe see my LCR Gold demo package being made. :) Can't wait.

EJ, I have been there...

I have heard that the production area has seen a lot of changes since I was there in '01.

We always have left them on also but the only problem we have is when the customer feels like they are wasting electricity by having the green led left on and they turn the switch off. We tell them specifically that the green led should always be on or no bass will be reproduced but there is the inevitable call saying the sub stopped working.

Granted, once your house is 15-20,000 square feet your utility bill is definitly getting up there but it makes you wonder when someone installs a 50-100K home theater and then takes issue over an extra few cents a month on the electric bill.

Thats exactly why we power our sub amps with solar panels.

If you guys can keep a secret I will tell you about my geothermal-hybrid-biofuel subwoofer.

It doesn't use any fossil fuels, but the current revision seems to only run on the carcasses of snow owls, bald eagle eggs, and manatee flippers...

I need to find a better source of bio-mass.

How about a surplus Russian Nuclear sub parked in the pool out back!

That should supply enough power...
