My wife I live in Manhattan at the moment, and we are about to start buiding a nice size house in Florida. I am looking for a Home Theater installer in the Miami area. I wondered at what stage of the process and based on what should I begin the process! Based on the architectural and electrical blueprints, should I start contacting people and hire one, now? Or later when the walls are up? I also planned to install a security and multi-zone audio/video systems. Any tip; question to ask; recommendation; experience you want to share are welcome and highly appreciate!

ditto what Vinny and KDP said, plus one more thing...
Your home theater guy really needs to be on the same wavelength as your interior designer...You might want an entire home package including GOOD telephones, network, coax everywhere, and house sound in addition to the theater, and coordination (and cooperation) is a must!

Mourad, I am a custom installer located in Denver but I do installs nationally. We will be doing a job in Florida this Summer/Fall if it coinsides with your project we could do yours as well. We are CEDIA members, HomeTek Electronics, Inc., and are listed on their web page. If you are interested in having us do a quote please contact me, Brian, at [email protected].

How hard can this be? |

Thanks for all your inputs guys. VinnyBag, I went to www.cedia.org. It's a great site that helped me choose a certified contractor. I preselected 4 potential candidates out of a list containing 51 installers based in Florida. They are all geographicaly close to the future construction site.
Ahl, you're absolutly right! After my experience of my current home theater, I came to the same conclusion! All of them are technically able to offer a package for the entire home (A/V system, phone, security system, intercom, Home theater...)
Now the question is: How do I pick the final one? I will request to my architect 4 sets of blueprints of the house that I will hand to them! I figured, after interviewing each one of them give them the general guideline and the drawings, I should be able to get the bids that will help me make a final decision!

you're on the right track... i'd start by not dealing with anyone who badmouths the competition- it's unprofessional (besides, you never know when you'll need the guy you just referred to as a doofus to bail you out on something!)... Also, do all the research you can on all the systems you want to install- knowing what you're getting yourself into makes everyone's jobs easier!
Someone once said "The customer is always right"... Well, whoever said that is full of crap! An INFORMED customer is always right- an uninformed customer is someone who can (and WILL) be taken advantage of! Also, an informed customer gets stuff done right the first time, because they catch things the installer might miss (or might be taking a shortcut on... heh)
