I am looking for a keypad to control the second zone. and maybe expand to multisource system. Via seems to have everything I would want BUT I have not seen or played with there stuff. Need feedback good or bad. From user and installers. I also like they have paging and video use in other zones available. How is there products???
Thanks,
Andy

We use Elan exclusively for wholehouse and secondary zones.

Other than a few programming issues I had in the past, I believe their stuff is bullet-proof.

Andy,
It’s Friday night! Most ELAN installers are out spending all the money they made during the week. Most of them should be up and about by Monday.

Seriously, as John stated, there were some issues with the programming tools in the past. These issues have been addressed in the current generation and is proving to be a very stable platform.

The VIA! Touch Panel was designed for easy of use for the end-users and (what most manufacturers forget) the INSTALLERS. From an installer’s point of view, being able to install a product quickly is very important, maybe even more important than having an endless number of complicated features.

Again, this is from the point of view of an installer that is trying to run a successful business. Keep in mind that this is an installer orientated forum. I’m sure there are other points of views which may call for endless number of complicated features.

We use a lot of Elan and it is here and now extremely reliable. The Via is a great deal considering for IR it can operate standalone and there is optional RS 232 support available. Elan has a greyscale panel coming out at the same price as their Z100/z150 combo.
As to lack of response, do some homework and come back with a specific application and the response will pick up

I currently install VIA panels, and have designed a number of user interfaces. Once you get them in and working the way you want them to, they're solid. I've never had one crash, glitch up or step out of order since the overlay problems from last year were eliminated. It's a bit pricey for an average Joe, but considering it's features, I think it's a great value. I think you have to ask yourself if you really need all the features it presents; if not, then you can go with a keypad/companion system that will save you some bucks.

Be aware that as an Elan dealer I am somewhat biased. But having said that, after the initial problems when it was first introduced, it has proven to be a solid, flexible, easy (comparatively)to program unit. We have used them as stand-alone devices, as home controllers, as part of entire Elan systems and even have substituted them into some conference room installs instead of Crestron.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner but, as Hector said, it was Friday night and we decided spend some of our Elan profits by taking the SST to Paris for the night.

Ditto to what ZoneOne says. Being on the left coast, we were in Napa Valley drinking expensive wine all weekend, and when we got home, even in a slightly foggy condition, my wife was still able to push one button on our VIA panel and make the system come to life. I use my wife as a beta test for my customers. If she can do it, usually they can too!!! In my house, it's a stand-alone controller for my theater as well as the controller for my VIAMusic CD Library Controller. We have found it to be a generally flexible, easy to use and easier than Crestron to program. Crestron offers more ultimate flexibility, but at a significant cost increase.

I hope my opinion is helpjul to you.
