Does anyone know where the IR input is for the Sony XBR RPTV is? I've got the back off of it, but can't find anything that looks like an IR input. Also, can IR be fed into an S control input?
How hard can this be?

Control S or S control requires you to strip the carrier from the IR code. IF you have a Crestron/AMX system you could modify the IR file accordingly. A Xanteck 794-xx will accomplish the same thing with an IR control system. Sending IR with the carrier ( as you would directly from a remote ) will not work.

In general IR sensors for RPTVs are inside. I locate a blast emitter somewhere within the unit. Each Brand is different and I use Crestron so I use the a IR file with the carrier stripped. Trial and error and a blast IR emitter.

Yup... VERY popular location for sony to hide the IR Receiver. Many XBR Rear Pros used this.

An off topic story, but a true one, and you'll see my point in a paragraph or three.

My wife and I went to Italy last summer. We rented a very spiffy Peugot cabriolet, kind of a convertible with a clamshell folding hardtop thing. Lots of fun.

Off we went into the countryside. At our first stop we put the valuable stuff in the trunk and closed the clamshell top. Walked around a bid, and then went back to the car. Tried the clamshell again, and it would not go. A polite warning came up on the dash in Italian, but I couldn't figure out what it meant. The trunk would not open with the key fob thing any longer, either. No key slot in the trunk, hence no way to open the trunk. The manual was no more help than the dash warning.

We're screwed, we're in the hinterlands of Umbria, and no idea what to do. We start driving, thinking we'll find someone at the hotel that can speak enough English to help us. We pass a Peugot dealership, and my wife makes me (yes, makes me; I'm a guy and I don't want to ask for help, you know...) go back to the dealership. She jumps out, corrals a guy and mimes about the trunk. He comes out, laughs, and (the smart ones among you know where this is going) pushes the center of the O on the Peugot on the trunk. The trunk lid pops open. Turns out I had not secured the cargo net in the trunk and the darned thing locked the car up.
Carpe diem!

Thon,

I just went through this recently with an XS model. (55") I can't tell you exactly... because its not at all obvious, and I can't remember... but the IR pickup is near the front, bottom, right of the TV cabinet. I thought it was in the screen ... wrong... So I just moved the remote around to see where I got good response. If I remember correctly, I actually stuck the flasher to the underside of the front lip in this area (pointing down)...
...couple a thumb tacks and a stick of double sided tape should hold this baby up...
