In simple terms, a qam tuner is the cablecard system? Am I correct in that assumption!

My handle is Tweety but I have nothing to do with the organization of similar name. I just had a really big head as a child so folks called me tweety bird. |

not exactly. QAM is a system for broadcasting digital and high definition signals. I have a set top box that is QAM compatible. A cablecard that receives digital signals can be QAM compatible also.

QAM stands for Quadrature Amplitude Modulation, which is a fancy way of saying "a modulation method of carrying a signal on an RF carrier". Something that is a QAM signal can be either digital or analog.
Either way a demodulator which will be used by a receiver, in your case the TV but could be a cable box or similar, to demodulate and view a picture that we would recognize, needs to be QAM compatible because this is the method used by cable companies etc to modulate much of their channel line-up, particularly pay channels because it can be encoded/scrambled easily.
Therefore your TV could decode a QAM signal but does not necessarily have a cable card slot. This means that you could view a QAM signal if it were not further encoded by a scrambling system such as a pay channel would be. In order to demodulate AND decode the signal you would need a cable card!
Most TV's that have a cable card slot specifically mention this capability.

side note about cable cards, most of the time they will not work, and when they do, you loose all of the features that the cable box provides (VOD, channel info, programming info...channel searching...), but at the same time you will most likely get a better picture (read better tuner), that is if you can get the cable card to work. I just try to make sure as many of my customers use DSS, but cable is still a necessary evil when DSS cannot be installed.
