I am going to Cedia to hopefully get my level 1 license. I have been installing for 6 years and while I don't know everything I do know the basics and have common sense. I am wondering what types of questions are on the installer level 1 test. I am not looking for specific answers to questions on the test but more of an overview of the types of things I will need to know. For example will a good knowledge of the national electric code help or would I be wasting my time studying it.
I appreciate any direction you guys who have taken the test can give me.

Phil

Phil, CEDIA has a one day prep course for the test. I pay for my guys to take that course before the test. If you have been installing various systems for 6 years, you should be in pretty good shape.

I'm signed up for the $289 course. I'm looking for some idea of what types of things I should know for the test that I could study now.

Phil, I've taken and passed Installer I, II, and Designer I tests. Installer I will test your knowledge on NEC codes, OSHA regulations, connector and wire identification, construction practices that affect your job (basically structural stuff), and more of the like... as deco said, the one-day course will be all you need to pass the test, along with your 6 years of experience. They'll provide you with a study guide that you'll be able to take with you and study overnight. Really, it's a breeze. If I remember, it's 100 questions, and you get 3 hours (I think) to finish. Plus they mail you a nice little certificate to stick on your wall when you pass.

Hopefully you won't stick it up with a thumbtack.

Study NEC codes pertaining to low voltage wiring practices, OSHA regulations; know how to differentiate between wire types and which connector type goes on which wire. Not everything on the test is in the class, but they cover 90% of the material.

6 years in the industry? dont sweat it. In fact pour yourself a tall one and toast yourself, you will fly through it. If you are gonna take any other courses make sure to skip level 100 and 200. These are for people new to the industry. Dont get me wrong CEDIA rules! just steer clear of what i told you,"waste of funds if you have 6 years in the trenches"
Im sure there will be many postings on what i told you but, what i say is true!
See you at cedia!

It's getting very close now. I think I am starting to sweat, one week from tomorow morning. I really hope the prep class is broad, and all incompasing. Phil> If you would like to get together and study (if you think that you would need to) then give me an email and maybe we could set something up.
