The hard drive on my Motorola DCT 6200 DVR died. It had about 30 unwatched episodes of my wifes favorite soap on it. Needless to say she was pissed. Does this happen to anyone else? What can we do to prevent it? I don't know about you guys, but I do not want to get the trouble calls from my customers when it happens to them. I hate playing cable guy, even though I once was one.

The coolest thing about this deal is that us CI guys are out of the loop on this one. Aren't you glad you're not selling Cable DVR's? It's as sure as death the drive is going to have the pie at about year two.

This is one of the many excellent reasons we let DirecTV and Dish do the dishes as well.
Manuals?! We don't need no stinking manuals! a.. er..

Buy a DVD-R to archive shows from your DVR to harddisc. Yes, these DVR's will die after a few years as will DiretTV's DVR units. At least you don't own your Cable company's DVR, they will replace that for free. DirecTV on the other hand, the expense is yours.

I had my first DirecTivo (Sony SAT-T60) for almost 6 years before the drive went south. I called Dtv and they sent me new one at no charge with free install ( not needed, but oh well) and a couple of programing incentives.

We sell the (HD/DVR)service for the cable company, and stock their boxes for our installs. So naturally our clients call us first when they have cable problems.

If you want to attempt to recover the recordings the hard drive may still be readable. It would require taking the drive out of the DVR and putting it into a PC as a slave drive. Then you can take the files and transfer them to another media storage device.

It's a long shot and the drive may be totally unreadable (Toasted) but I often have varrying degrees of success when attempting to recover files from a crashed hard drive. You could also try running the drive manufactures diagnostics (or a generic diagnostic tool such as WD Diag) to attempt to repair the drive. These diagnostics are free from the manufactures web site.

It may be more work then your willing to tackle but it's on option.

No can do. Moto uses a proprietary filesystem and partition map.
