I've read several of the postings on gas fireplace control using programmable IR remotes - such as those offered by Universal Remote - and all have been helpful. However, one question remains unanswered that I'm hoping someone can help me with - who are the more common manufacturers of IR controllable gas fireplaces that would be available in Canada? Thanks a lot.

Any fire place that utilizes a simple toggle switch for the low voltage can be controlled with IR via an IR contact closure switch like that which comes with an RTI RP6 module [Link: rticorp.com], or a Xantech CC-12 relay module http://www.xantech.com/ ................................

Thanks for your suggestion. In effect, the switching function is performed by the CC-12 (rather than a decora toggle switch on the wall). If I understand you correctly, the CC-12 would be wired as follows. Please correct me if I misunderstood you. Thanks for your help.

1. Connect the LV toggle of the fireplace to either the N/O or N/C relay output of the CC-12 (as required by the fireplace).
2. Connect the CI and GND inputs of the CC-12 to the 2 wires that carry an IR signal from an IR receiver (for example, the IR output port on the back of the MRF-250 from Universal Remote)
3. Provide 12VDC power and GND from a power supply to the +12VDC and GND inputs on the CC-12.

Does this sound correct?

Here's the question... what models have gas valves that can be controlled like this?? Anyone know some good name brands vs. brands to avoid??

Also, what about variable control and/or steps in the size of the flames??

What's the good setup??
