Has anyone had cuccess with a wireless access point that will work reliably in the 400-600 yard range? I have two structures on the same property with good line of sight between. I want to install two cameras, either IP or with a local camera server, at the remote structure. The main house would need to be able to view and control the two cameras reliably. I'm looking for something that is likely industrial in quality, able to work well in an unconditioned, unheated enviroment.

you need point to point wireless devices. I remember seeing that US Robotics makes a consumer version but I'm sure there's a more durable commercial way to do it too. Basically two plates pointed at each other. One of the nurseries in the area has this between their house and their barn. I'll see if I can get out there within the next week and see what brand they are using. I need some mulch anyway :-)

Also, I shared a supplier of this type of stuff at I.P. You may want to check them out too. I believe they have a solution for this.
Why all the fighting and cussing? Can't Dave play nice? We're just here to learn and have fun. It was a harmless jab, laugh and get over it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Theaterworks,

I have done a couple networks like that in the past. The most recent I used Alvarian wireless products. It was a "point to multipoint" type system but could just have 2 points. I had Internet, Data, and VOIP all running over this link and it worked perfectly. If I remember right they were all weather (we get pretty crazy hot and cold weather in my area) and they even had Heaters built in for the winter. The other option to consider is Dlink's new business class wireless equipment. I have not used any but heard some good things...they also have heaters for cold climates. Oh yeah and both can be POE so all you have to do is run an outdoor cat5 and ground wire the the radio.

Here is an awesome 802.11b/g antenna. depending on your AP, you may need two. the coverage w/ these is incredible. We used them to pickup 2 PCs @ a boathouse that was about 1200' away from the AP. The signal is always @ the maximum on the Windows Wireless mgr (but we all know how inaccurate that is).

This is the only link I could find on it. Contact me via email, and i will forward you the original email that i got on it.

Your other option is to use wireless bridges, instead of an AP, w/ directional antennas, either Yagi or patch antennas.
We have installed plenty of these systems on the commercial side, & a few on the resi side.

The best price is not always the best value.
