I am working with McIntosh WK-3 kepads. I am know that they are pretty much a wired McIntosh remote that cant be programmed. So the system is using RCT4 remote translator. My question is can I, and if so how, program the source buttons of the WK-3 with ir commands? I know you start with a McIntosh remote to tell the RCT4 what button you want it to learn but I could not get it to accept the source buttons as off the remote to program. I am coming in to an existing system and it does appear the previous installer got some of the source buttons to program but I don't know how.
Any help would be great.

Unfortunatley when I called McIntosh they told me it couldn't be done but when I select cd input it starts playin the cd which means there is a command for that input button. Don't know how it is done but there has got to be a way. Maybe I will try them again and this time tell them I have seen it done. Then I might get their "expert".

p.s. If you ever have a choice to use this system or any other system choose any other system!

Those McIntosh Whole House Audio systems are the biggest steaming piles of crap on the planet. And I am a McIntosh dealer! I will never sell that sh*t ever. Love their amps and Surround preamps but that is all. I inherited a system where the poor customer had been sold dual CR-12’s, the black IR converter box and several of those 3 gang keypads. The system was always crashing. I sent several of the pieces in for repair and after thousands of dollars in trouble shooting and installation charges, thousands of dollars on repair from McIntosh, we finally got the system up and running only to have it go down again in less than 3 months. This stuff is a nightmare. And very expensive! A $3000 Russound or Xantech system works better and delivers more features than this $15k heap of crap.

After several more attempts at trying to get it up a second time, we finally threw in the towel. I installed a HomeLogic system, Audio ReQuest server, Russound CAV6 system and it has been operating nearly perfectly for almost a year now. They are now so happy and can’t believe that a Whole House Music system actually works and plays music every day – without crashing. They put up with this McIntosh system not working properly for almost 5 years. And collectively got about 6 months of music in those 5 years.

My advice is to advise the clients that this system will never operate properly and if you do get it to work it will still go down continually until you remove it, take it out to the country and give it the proper executions it deserves (a sledge hammer and then dynamite). You are headed for many months of frustration. Don’t say you I didn’t warn you.

I've had the opposite experience... We hooked up dual CR12s for a guy to run his outdoor and indoor multi-room systems. We ran them both with intellicontrols, so we didn't need this 'IR black box'. It's been up and running with only minor issues for years now... Sounds good, and seems to work reliably... With all of that said, however, we never would have sold him the CR12 if he hadn't had one already from his old house... We would have done Audio Access, probably.
