A customer of mine asked me which Plasma to buy between a 50" Samsung or a 50" LG. Do anybody know which brand is better between the two, or are they about the same in quality? Have anybody out there installed any LGs?

With all the problems with Samsung discretes with their DLP's I find it hard, maybe impossible to support anything they produce.
I am not familiar with their plasmas so I cannot comment on their quality. I have had good luck with the LG product in general and they seem to support the custom install industry. I personally prefer the Pioneer as far as plasmas go, but that was not your question.

Just my 2 cents...

Flip a coin...
They are both Korean made panels that are geared to hit lower price points. Not that this is a bad thing, the world needs economy cars too, just know what you are buying/selling.

I have used the LGs and Samsungs, and they are decent quality if that is the concern.

LGs policy of offering tons of different panels in a dizzying variety of different bezels combined with their high model turnover are a turn-off to me. As a person that specifies panels in a quote that may be three generations old by the time they are ordered. I at least want the panel to be oriented the same way as the one I specified in terms of connectivity, tuners (NTSC tuner, ATSC tuner, or no tuner) and in terms of speakers (speakers on sides vs. bottom vs. no speakers)

Fujitsu,Hitachi and Pioneer all sell better panels at that size, but are usually a little more money.
I also like that they keep models around for while and aren't trying to reinvent the wheel with every new model.

New generations are pretty predictable and usually just add functional upgrades, not off the wall whiz bang multi-color contoured 3-D bezels and completely re-designed speaker arrangements.

I hate video...

I know I'm not answering your question but would choose the NEC if you needed a plain moniter or a pioneer if you need speakers and tuner. my 2

I would buy an NEC as well, best bang for the buck and it has all of the discreets right on the remote, and if you live in Canada, it comes with a 3 year warranty.

My Boston job has 61" NEC, 50" LG and 42" LG plasmas among other displays of different technologies and sizes. I have had no opportunity to calibrate any of these displays and given the time consumed in making that system work I may not ever get around to it. However, I have been quite happy with the LG plasmas. Superior com protocol, rear IR jack, with 2 component inputs, VGA, DVI and composite/Svideo jacks. If you give a damn, it has a pass through A/V jack ( commerical vestige ). My only objection may be seen as a plus, which is that the composite and S-video inputs are the same and that there is a front panel A/V jack. And it has a built in ATSC tuner. They blew it this year by making the speakers integral but then they also lowered the price. As I make no money irrespective a brand or model I would rather have expensive no profit items cost as little as possible so that there is room in the budget for profitable items.

All of the above displays have fewer inputs, often less than perfect protocols ( though the NEC is decent ) and cost more. I am less certain that the LG is a display that should not be sold more often but I have not attempted to calibrate it. No client ever complains irrespective of quality however.

Thanks guys for your inputs. My customer went with the LG. We will be installing the Plasma and a 5.1 surround next week.
