I have a great 20yr old blonde remote control.
I can't use it, my wife won't let it in the house!
Back to square one.

Send it over, I'll use it

I went through training on that model during college, but I haven't been able to afford one for myself in years...

The problem is that I have no remote control
to switch between the inputs. There is a button
on the monitor which switches between the 4 inputs.

How do I build a remote control to hit this
button from my couch?
TIA

Well, this is gonna be a bit of a kludge... but I think it's along the lines of what you are looking for.

I know that X10 made a module that would momentarily close a set of contacts when you sent the correct house and unit code. You would wire this in parallel with the current switch. If I remember correctly there are seperate contacts on the unit, and you would use the normally open or normally closed set, depends on how the button you wire this in parallel to works.

Then you'll just need a X10 controller that accepts IR codes. There are a number of these, many come with IR remotes which can be programmed to operate a wide variety of manufacturers equipment.

Hi all,

There is a button
on the monitor which switches between the 4 inputs.

How do I build a remote control to hit this
button from my couch? Maybe a small solenoid or
motor clipped on to the button, controlled by
RF or IR?

Any creative ideas, or equipment I could use?
(short of a long stick :-)

TIA

Xantech makes a 6 relay unit that is remote controllable. Just hardwire the relays to the switches on the monitor.
I had to do this to operate an RF remote for motorized doors and lights on Brinkman cabinet.

Its a kludge, its expensive but it works.
