I haven't seen this one yet... but I haven't been hitting the theaters as much as I would like. [Link: dev.thx.com]It's called "Science" and the THX website called it a "sneak preview", so maybe it's the one for next week's big Episode III: Sith extravaganza... Here are the old ones... I am wondering about THX, is it incorperated in DOLBY DIGITAL or what? do you have to have a system that can decode the THX its self or what? and can/does my pioneer VSX-D814/S handle the THX?

For the home environment it's not a sound system, it's special processing (of any type of audio) along with a set of minimum equipment standards. Your equipment is either THX-certified or isn't. You'll know if it is, since it'll have a big logo plastered on the front.
Fair bit of controversy on whether it's really better or worth it, and so on.

Speaking of THX, have they done a good job marketing themselves to the consumer market or not?
When the standard was first announced, it seemed like most of the speaker companies were scurrying to have THX product, but now I'm not seeing it so much anymore.
CEDIA branded....geez don't get me started on THAT one!

CEDIA branded....geez don't get me started on THAT one! Yes and no... We are a THX Certified company, my partner went 7 years ago, and then again a couple years ago. I can't say that we have been gotten a job directly from being on that list, but we mention the industry certifications we have accumulated and advanced trainings we have been through. That may have helped secure a job we may have otherwise lost over price... I know we charge more than the other companies we face most often, but our rap and portfolio probably have more to do with it than the letters that we mention, nobody recognizes any of them anyway....

I first snorted at THX when I read that the center channel signal is meant to sound like a theater speaker behind a screen. In other words, after years of working to achieve high fidelity reproduction, we had a standard built on distortion! If you try to make a speaker sound like it is behind a screen, you have to roll off the high frequencies; changing the frequency response from perfect IS distortion.
Then I stopped paying attention AT ALL when I saw my first set of THX-approved computer speakers.

That's the original Tex trailer that they made for Surround EX. It might just belong to someone in the dept, or maybe it was a gift from the Yamaha or Pioneer rep to demo the THX Select receivers that are now available at BB. Denon, Meridian, Lexicon and other THX partners gave that disc away as a promo DVD, and some dealers put their copies on ebay. They sold for up to $100 dollars for a while, but now there is a new one that everyone wants instead. I still have my copy of Tex...

John Dahl from THX was giving away a DVD full of THX trailers last year at CEDIA when they were coming out with their THX certified rooms for consumers. It's lots of fun!

Supposedly THX dealers and THX partner manufacturers still have these discs...
As a THX Cert. Dealer that sells a lot of THX Cert. lines, we haven't received any...

The average consumer doesn't know, or doesn't care if the auditorium is THX certified or not, so they figure why spend the extra money on it.

THX was also giving away demo discs at CEDIA. You had to visit a bunch of other booths to get your "passport" stamped. When you got the required number of stamps, they gave you the disc.

Actually most theaters won't get certified because to do it they would have to rip out the first 10-15 rows of seats. If we had a THX certified theater in Nebraska, I'd go to it every time. As it goes right now, I don't have the time to go to too many movies :)
