I use dolphins for all of my small guage connections, they are available at any electrical supply store.

After drill twisting use a large sledgehammer to tidy any unsightly lumps.

Seriously --- 3m scotch loks. They've got me out of many situations where i've had to extend or repair cut cables

or you can make it detachable by crimping RJ45 connectors each cable at the splice junction, then use a CAT5 pass-through connector to make the connection.

regarding the red ones, if you are clamping onto cut emitter wires, they have to be striped 3/4 of an inch first and folded over before inserting into the crimp, in this way they make a great hook contact and wont pull out. I use them all the time and never have a problem.

Thanks for the tip on the scotch locks...I tried the red "butt splices" from Home Depot, but I think the wires were too small, and got no signal through the splice. Plus, my hands are too big to set both wires at one time, and crimp it before one falls out....guess it take practice.......
