what do you guys use to splice cat5? This is not for a network connection, I need to extend a rj45 for an ir application. Seems someone had mentioned a small clamp device awhile back that worked well for 24 guage.

For non network connections I use Dolphin connectors. Simple and cheap. You can also use "jellybean" splices (available at the local Home Depot). Local telco uses them all the time for splicing phone lines.

Worst case if you don't have any of those connectors mentioned above is to pull a RJ45 jack wall plate insert from your structured wiring box and punchdown the wire to it. Then crimp an RJ45 plug on the end of the new wire and plug them together.

just use scotch locks. I have used them for data splices with no problems.

The important thing with CAT5 connections is maintaining the twist of the pairs as close to the connection as possible. the punch down and connector solution is probably the best one.

agreed - if it's being used for ethernet.

But for a simple IR system I'm cool with twist & tape, or chicklets.

Solder & heatshrink! thats one hell of a cat5 splice !!

It's twist, tape, stomp and tie in a knot.

just twist them and insert them into your drill and pull the triger at high speed! twist until the colors change from solid to pastel and you are there.

That sounds like the tigers who turned into butter in Little Black Sambo.
