Have any of you guys used really long VGA cables? I have a job were I need to send computer displays to two different monitors in a basement. Should I run one 80 ft cable to a distribtion amp and then two 20ft cables or run two 100 footers from the source? Will 80 footers work without amplification? If not what amplifiers have you had success with?

thanks

J

I have an application where I am running a 80' Pro Flex VGA to a Key Digital KD-SW4x1 switcher. The signal then goes another 50' to the display (Toshiba 62HM84). This is the longest run, there are also two mor inputs fo 50' and 12'. There has been no noticeable loss between any of the computers with this setup.

I did a Doctrs office with 3 separate 50' feeds and a VGA splitter (something akin to an ATEN VAG splitter). All three moniters looked great and the specs on the splitter I used would amplify up to 140' per run. I'll need to check my records to find the exact model, however, I can tell you I googled "VGA Splitter" ad looked for a good deal.
I use Key digital quite a bit for other apps and they're products are fantastic.

Good luck.

I use extended VGA cables on a regular basis. I have had good luck up to about a hundred feet. Very minimal loss. However, the cable should be of high quality. You should be able to buy a decent 75' cable for about $40-$50. I typically pay about $20.00 for 50ft VGAs, and yes, the quality is good. Try MilesTek www.milestek.com, or Cablewholesale www.cablewholsale.com. There are a million other sources on the internet with similar prices. I would stay away from Belkin or Monster.

It all depends on the quality of the cable and how much shielding it has. I used to use the cables from a company called Extron which were awesome and would run up to 150 ft with no amplification but there are many other qaulity cable manufactirers out now. If you are planning on splitting the signal it's always a good recommendation to add a distribution amplifier at that split point.
