Has anyone here seen or heard the Yamaha YSP - 1?

It is meant to be quite good by all accounts

Yes. We've setup 2 of them. It's not Hi-Fi, but it's pretty good at what it does for the price. No receiver/speakers needed, everything plugs into it. You'd not want to use it for your main theater, but for casual rooms, it's pretty slick. Works best in enclosed (mostly) symmetrical rooms.

Bottom line: It has its place, and we'll definitely be doing more of them.

I am curious if we might see ultra high-end surrounds based on this technology from Yamaha, or maybe even someone like Meridian.

If the YSP-1 can create a faux surround with one speaker, imagine what kind of immersive soundfield that could be created by placing a set of arrays like this in the traditional surround placements...

ive had mine for over a month now. works great and very very customizable. to set it up just get a tape measurer and go threw the set up menus. i am using it in a 8ft. by 8ft room and its great for this kind of space. i picked mine up for $1200

OEX,
Use the Composite video out for the on screens. We were overly impressed with the Beam Modes. Setup is Fun when adjusting the Beam menu. But it is what it is.

The Discrete code are available on yamaha site but i cant get the rxv2500,1500, or 757 to output the codes. will try on the newer versions of the 2500.

Just read a review (I think) Sound & Vision, and they said it was good for what the above posters mentioned (2nd room, wiring challenges). Not a good substitute for a typical surround system. The surround they said sounded good but it didn't seem like you were really in the middle of it, more like on the edge of it. Most of the sound was (predictably) in front of you.

It is what it is.

We have one set up, and it works great. Better than any other "simulated surround" system. Compare the YSP to similar products like the Nero and Bose 321 and you have a clear cut winner.

I just heard my 1st demo of one today. Sounds pretty good! We will be using one in an upcoming project in which there is no practical way to get wire, and the client is pumped up about having something that he can take with him when he moves. Does anybody have the discretes in CCF or PCF form? Does anybody know if these are unique, or borrowed from Yamaha receivers? Thanks for any tips,

Anyone have discrete IR on and off. The posted codes go beyond the abiliity of the rxv2500 remote. I dont really want to have to create it in pronto edit and learn to urc's .mxd format

As i said in the previous post. I Cant get the output of the RXV's to output there codes. but for power there is a small delay when powering on the unit so two quick press of the power button for on two quick then delay then power once for off.

Very cool demo just last week. Quite amazing. You literally set it up to 5.1 for your favorite listening position while sitting in that position. The beam adjustment can take each channel and place it where it ought to be hitting you. Does need at least a small sub to do the job effectively.

I'll take a conventional 5.1/7.1 setup over this in a heartbeat but for those who have no interest in a speaker farm in the bedroom etc, great idea.

Our concern is the "non removeable" grill that really needs to be easily paintable without voiding a warranty. Yamaha has gotten more than one dealer request for this and I've been told that's being considered.
Manuals?! We don't need no stinking manuals! a.. er..
