Directv has always offered less than fully capable TIVO units. The HR10-250 is no exception. I have read about some hacks to open up the DirecTivo to the full feature set, but have never tried it.

I have both a DirecTivo and a standalone Tivo series 2. I am dfinatley going to try to integrate the Series 2 as a music server. Sounds cool.

I use the Squeezebox at home running off of a 500GB Windows 2000 Server P3-500 machine. Since I'm a Crestron programmer (but can't afford their hardware!), I'm a big fan of simple but sophisticated control.

The Squeezebox has a GREAT UI if you're sitting in front of it with the remote control. The web interfaces are generally good and I use the Touch interface to operate mine off of an old Icebox touch-screen kitchen flip-down LCD.

There is a Crestron module out there that somebody wrote but I haven't tried it.

The Squeezebox is a perfect solution for someone that already has a collection of music (especially if it's in strange/proprietary formats like Apple Lossless (everything of mine), Ogg, FLAC, etc.). For our customers, we install Audio Request units since the customers usually don't have a music collection already stored somewhere.

seconded regarding the squeezebox

they're a truly brilliant device - of course, this is assuming you have a pc that you can leave on to store all you're music (you can even use propriatory NAS boxes as some of those run on linux and so does the slimp3 / squeezebox software)

you can also use the slimp3 box to display caller ID, how many emails you have in, and its not tooooo difficult to do.

can anyone tell i really like this product? if you've not had the chance to have a proper play with one, i cant recomend it highly enough.

Onkyo Makes a product called a Nettune. It is integrated into some of the higher end Integra receivers and there is also a stand alone unit. The standalone unit is very affordable and it works great. It has a small led screen on the front that you could use to operate it without a monitor if you wanted. I beleive the model# is NC-500.
