Hi everyone,

I am going to pre-wire my new home for a surround sound system (6.1). What type of speaker cabling for in-wall do I need to use....I've been told CL3. As far as I know I need a 2-wire for this simple setup. Can the wire (assuming CL3) be run with in the same holes as electrical romex?

Also where are some decent places to purchase this (or other) wire? (I'd only need 100' or less).

And any other suggestions or tips.

Thanks! Lee

Ab, legally, yes, the speaker cable can share the same holes, as long as it is jacketed, but I would recommend drilling your own holes. As a second-best compromise, don't allow the speaker cable to run parallel to the Romex.

Try www.partsexpress.com or your local Home Depot or Lowe's.

I think 12 inches apart is recommended to reduce inductive noise on the Speaker wires. If you need to cross the power wire, cross as near 90 deg. as possible.

If you want to pass inspection, you must use UL approved sheathed cable. Home depot has 100' rolls of 16 ga for about $90 I recall. I'd go with 14 or 12 if you can find it. DO NOT RUN IT ADJACENT TO ELECTRICAL WIRING. Don't be lazy, drill new holes....unless you like a low interference hum coming through your speakers. Also try to keep speaker pairs running together (makes future changes or problem solving easier) and minimalize run lengths. Avoid areas where transformers are used (fluorescent and low voltage lighting). You can run your cat5 for your controllers with your speaker wire until you get to your wall box location. Good luck!
