I have a job coming up were the customer has DSS and is converting to HD. We are setting up a Mitsubishi 52725.

He wants local HD, however, he's behind a mountain. Cox Cable (Phoenix metro area) has local HD. Now, we discovered that all 7 local HD channels come in on the 725's tuner without a cable card (tried it yesterday with a 62725).

Question? Will the DSSHD or DSSHDTivo tuners pick those channels up? He wants to record the local HD's thru his Tivo (we really don't want to turbocharge the system by pulling them from the TV's tuner).

Note: We are finding that the PBS station (82.1) did not have sound thru the tuner - going to monkey with it again today.

FYI for you guys in Phoenix metro (these should be correct)

76.1 = 51
76.2 = 45
79.1 = 3.1 ABC
79.2 = 5.1 CBS
82.1 = PBS national
82.2 = 12.1 NBC
82.3 = PBS local
Manuals?! We don't need no stinking manuals! a.. er..

We have seen this situation with some television sets. Mostly sony's that pick up the transmissions. A buddy at the cable company confirmed this as an encryption poblem that they are having. It seems many of the new HD tuners will decode their enryption without use of a box/card. They are working on new encryption systems to remedy this problem. We have even had a few that were getting channels that now are no longer able to receive them.

I do not understand how the TV is picking up the channels. Are you hooking a cable into the TV from The cable company ?

Hughes HDtivo's do not have a cable tuner built in. They only have two off air tuners and two DSS tuners. I just had an install with cable and DSS and found it out the hard way :). I have also had installations that have used cable w/o a box or card and have gotten local HD channels. It doesn't make sense that cable companies would encrypt these channels, they are the local free channels not premium subscription channels. Of course greed will probably prevail on the part of cable companies.

Are there any DSS HD or HDDVR's that will also pick up the cable HDTV (not INHD or DSHD, just the locals)?

Are you right on the back side of S. Mountain and can't get an antenna to pick up the locals? Otherwise why mess with cable when you have sat?

Yes, Cable coming straight from distribution to back of television.

Scottsdale Rd/Doubletree - Camelback mountain is the obstruction.

Anyone know when DSS will broadcast local HD in the phoenix market?

I thought the cable boxes needed to modulate the channels.

Sorry, just looking for info.

Steve,

I gotcha.

Haven't been in that one before. There's a strip btwn Tatum and Scottsdale Rd, North and South of Bell/FLW for a ways, that you get behind Squaw Peak. I have run into this a couple of times if I couldn't get an antenna up high enough.

Good luck,

John
