I have a client which we installed a JVC HRS-3901U VCR.
The client wants to record from satellite which I figured no problem, JVC has discrete input codes. But it seems the discrete "input front" and "input rear" codes don't work for this VCR. (Unless there is something I'm missing here.)

Does anyone know from first-hand experience, which current JVC SVHS VCR's support the discrete input codes?

Thanks in advance,

JJP

JJ, it may be that the unit "defaults" to the rear inputs unless you plug a cable into the fronts.

Actually, the problem lies with the VCR "forgetting" what input it's supposed to be on after a power failure. It always reverts to "F-1", which is the front inputs. I'm using the rear inputs for recording.

If I issue a "0" followed by the "enter" command, it takes me to the inputs. But it always ends up on the last selected input, not a problem unless you lose power. Then it reverts to "F-1" first.

If a "Channel down" command is issued after the above macro, the first time it is issued, it will take you to "R-1". But if the VCR was on "R-1" and you issue the macro, it ends up on the next lower channel and will steadily channel down everytime the macro is issued, unless you have a power outage. So I don't have a true anchor command.

I'm hoping someone can shed some light here.

Thanks again,

JJP

Thanks Zinon, you've been a great help so far. Though it's the rear input I'm after.

I'll check the setup again, but I'm wondering if this needs to be done after EVERY power outage. That would suck if it did.

Thanks again,

JJP

I own the 3901 and 3900, there's no
input button, all you have is "0".And
that just defaults to the last input
you used. From there you use ch+orch-.
The discretes for on&off, in both a&b
codes work. Thats the ofa codes.

All JVC VCRs that I have worked with have all seem to have the same IR codes, the exception being the newer digital recorders. I use Crestron, but these codes must also exist for other systems. VCRs that I can verify working w/ discrete on/off input selection include:

HRS-3900 HRS-3901 HRS-7800, HRS-9800, SR-TS1U

Note that if you use the IR jack on the back, you will need to strip the IR carrier frequency from the driver, or use a Xantech bridge.

Also note that the rear input selection was mislabelled on the JVC / Crestron driver that I was using. The driver I use lists the LINE1 discreet command as LINE2.

Sorry, I can't help with the other brands. But John do you know about the
feature on Jvc's vcr called REC-LINK.
All you do is program the satellite,
to turn itself on,and choose its own
channel. Now you turn the sat off,and
leave it. Put a tape in the vcr, press
REC-LINK button, the vcr goes out. Now
the next time a signal hits the back
inputs,it starts recording. When the
sat turns itself off, the vcr goes off.
It doesn't matter if the vcr was on a
channel, L-1,or f-1. Its what brought
me back to jvc vcrs. The feature disappeared for awhile. As long as
theres room on the tape, you can have
multiple events programmed. I haven't
used it since I got my PVRs.

John-

This won't help you here, but just for the record, all Mitsu VCR's have true Tuner, Line 1, & Line 2 input discretes... very handy.

Thanks Barry.

I have a Mitsu and that's one of the things I like about it, next to the great tapes it makes.

JVC is a problem child like this, It will also revert to composite input upon failure, and you have to select s-video again through a menu setting. (at least on the models I have worked with)
