Does anyone know of a cheap VCR that has discrete On/Off power commands?
I need to integrate one into a full system.
Thanks,
George

George, JVC, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, RCA, Sony, Zenith, etc. Most units from these brands (and more) have discrete power codes available! Randy www.BlueDo.com

Unless you need an S-video model, in which case you can rule out the Sony (discontinued) and the Panasonic (excellent unit, but without discrete power.) Sorry, no experience with the rest of the above list!

George,
What they are saying is that most of those models above have discrete code capability, it DOES NOT mean that those discrete buttons exist on the factory remote itself. You may need to buy a pronto, or have a friend with one and use the discrete codes give in the files section of this site. Under Pronto....

Rca's remotes come with discrete buttons, if want a power toggle for them, then you have go to another brands remote.

Thanks everyone.
I will look at the Pronto files. I will also take a look at some of the JVC units.

Sorry that I do not have a list, but also check to see if pushing PLAY turns the VCR on. This is a feature of several current models. If this works, then use PLAY to turn it on, POWER to turn it off.

Mitsubishi VCRs from the past 8 years (excepting very cheap promo units) respond to the following power workarounds, and will save you the need for pronto... Macro: MENU, MENU = POWER ON MENU, MENU, Power toggle = POWER OFF and on some models, Quick Program, Quick Program = POWER OFF
Note that the Q.P., Q.P. macro will interrupt a recording in progress...I recommend using the MENU based macro if this is an issue for you.
Same Deal on Mitsu. DVD Players... Play = POWER ON Play, Power toggle = POWER OFF
Have fun!

Ian , aren't the latest Mitsubishi vcr's made by Sharp? I couldn't stand that self-diagnostic feature. It would show up, than freeze-up.

Edmund...the Mits units may very well be made by Sharp. This is not neccesarily a bad thing. The self diagnostic error codes can be used when you call mitsu tech support... they will tell you which combination of buttons to press to reset your vcr. Most of the error codes relate to a user resettable "fuse" that protects the motors & power supply from trying to pull a cheap 8 hour tape (too much friction in the cassette, too hard to pull).
Matt...Yes I have several more IR "psudo-descrete back door macros", I'll try to compile a list of them and post them here. For now here are a few more nuggets...
JVC D-series & Flat TVs / Most Sony TVs / Some Toshiba TVs: Anchor your toggle input cycle with the "Channel UP" command; this will always get the TV to go to its antenna input...from there you can use small macros to "toggle" your way around to the input you really want.
Mitsubishi DVD players: "Play" command reliably turns 'em on, "Play, Power" reliably turns 'em off.
I'll post more when I get a chance to refresh my memory. It will be good for me and all of you to actually put them down on paper.
