does anyone know of a vcr / vhs player (not digital) that has discrete codes or buttons for on and off not just a power toggle? This is for use w/ an mx-850-thanks

Note that only higher-end Sony models do. The lowest ones have dropped discrete support.

All current Mitsubishi's are remote-friendly.

I'll chime in on the JVC players. It's all we will use anymore.

VCR? Ugh, but why worry about discrete on/off when you can just use a nice Harmony remote?

Cause the buttons are too small for most people, cause it's not configurable enough for everyone here...etc, etc.

Panasonics work great. Use the generic Panasonic 8 code (157) P-Off is on page four.

I have the biggest, meatiest paws known to mankind - yet I can use a Harmony with no problems. :)

When you get to my age or the age of my customers with typical eyesight, I think the buttons are pretty challenging to read. The LCD is none too large, either. Only my opinion of course. Cute remote otherwise.

Mits VCRs also power on when PLAY is hit. This is the common workaround for lack of discrete power commands. Then POWER is only used when the VCR is known to be on. Works fine.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Sony VCR (SLV-N750) has discrete power.
