I wish to control the multiroom function on my marantz sr 7400 via my computer.
Is this possible? via the rs232 or via the ir input?

Yes, RS232 is possible. Simply try talking to it using Hyperterminal (included with Windows) or similar. The question is will you be able to do anything useful with it without being able to control other devices? Download this file for the discrete IR & RS232 codes [Link: marantz.com]

my original idea was to programme a small atmel processor or similar with a small lcd-display and a keyboard. This would be a very cool thing to have in the bathroom.
but first i will try it with my computer.

I've used a PC to troubleshoot via hyperterminal. Works very straight forward - no calculating check sums on the receiver, etc. Only thing I can think of that could throw you for a loop - under preference in the menu, change the power mode from "ECONOMY" to "NORMAL". Otherwise, you won't be able to turn the unit on via RS232.

thanks!
so to begin with i could just hook my reciever to my computer via the rs232 cable and then start hyper-terminal and try sending AA to turn it on? or do i have to send it to a certain adress? If you could give me a sample code i would be very greatful!

First, set your baud rate, etc. For flow control, set hardware. Then it would be "@1AA" followed by a carriage return (enter) for your example.

The 'Shack has your cables... depending on the config of the Marantz serial port, you may need the "null modem" version which switches a pair inside one of the connectors. It's kind of like a network crossover cable.
Just one question... Why are you reinventing the wheel?? There are dozens of products that already exist available to you at decent pricing from site advertisers that will do this for you. Heck, any of a dozen single or two gang KPs I can think of will give you all the control you would need, and the Xantech SmartPad LCD or any of the similar competitors could give you graphics capabilities if that's your goal.

Rc GEEK: do you know which cable i should use? null modem or straight?
2nd rick: i´m going to use in the bathroom so a touchscreen lcd wouldn´t work very good.

You don't have to rule out touchscreens in the bath, I have put Elan Via's into a mirror over the vanity (they even had one set up like that in their booth a few years ago) and Crestron offers a protective film insert that goes under the bezel of their touchscreens for bathroom use... Anyway, I was speaking more of the Xantech SmartPad 3 or WaterPad http://www.xantech.com/or Niles IntelliPad [Link: nilesaudio.com]These products have hard buttons that you can program with IR commands and/or macros. Many of the pros here are very experienced with them and participate in threads to troubleshoot issues.
