Hello.

I am working on a wholesale clothing showroom where the GC put 2x6's behind the sheetrock, between and connected to the metal studs as blocking for the 42" plasma mount. (I'm using a peerless articulating mount). I have six 3 inch wood screws securing the mount to the wall and the 2x6 blocking.

I had originally asked the GC to use doubled wood studs in that wall but he didn't. So my question is, how safe is this plasma? Does anyone have any experience with this type of blocking? My fear is that when the mount arm is fully extended the mount, blocking and plasma could tear through the 1/2" sheetrock and come crashing down. Am I being paranoid?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

As long as the 2x6 is secured to both studs, I wouldn't loose any sleep over it. Worst case scenario, the whole wall will fall over!!
I get paranoid every time I mount an extendable mount in a commercial situation. Especially with metal studs.

You should be fine. We've done these with 2x4's and been OK. We always hang on the end of the extended arm before putting the plasma up; my smallest tech weighs more than the largest plasma we've done.

I've pulled a Pioneer 43" Plasma on an articulating arm all the way out, and it was hung using only toggle bolts through metal studs. I think you'll be fine.

My only question being why wood screws instead of lag bolts? There is a significant difference between the two!

I was wondering the same thing. We use the chief bracket that extends out around 3' on 2x4 walls all the time, but always with lag bolts.

Point of order... Don't you guys mean 'lag screws' instead of lag bolts? bolts get nuts on the other end...

Good question, djnorm.
At the hardware store , they call them 'lag bolts', when, by nature, they are actually a scew!!!!

Go figure.
