You're correct, you don't need the 12v hooked
up to anything UNLESS you are using the connecting
block to power an IR receiver that needs 12v to
operate.

If I remember right (I am speed reading here) the 791 is an amplified block. That means that it needs a power supply. It has a jack for a sensor.

I think someone suggested connecting an IR output to the input of this block. This is correct, but do not take the elegant approach of using a mini plug into the sensor input to make this connection. That will short the power supply. Just use the screw terminals.

Also, I believe the tip of mini plugs is the plus, not the minus.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Yea, you will need a 781rg power supply to power the 791.

My mistake... I was thinking you were using a 790 connecting block (non-amplified and thusly no p/s needed).

For the 791 you need a 781r/g power supply
The mini plugs on the xantech products are tip is + and ring is -
Use the phoenix connector for connecting you IR input into the 791 block.

Sorry if I caused you any headaches.

If you are using one power supply for the Niles stuff, and another for the 791 block, make sure to isolate the power power supplies by not interconnecting the 12V+ lead.
The Xantech power suppy (781RG) is a regulated supply and therefore cannot be parallelled with any other supply. It will burn up in a short amount of time.
