I have a customer who wants to operate his X-Box in his dedicated HT. The equipment is in a closet(rack mounted). We would like to have a plate on the wall that he could plug his controller into. Any ideas? Is the plug a standard plug of some type? What type of wire does the game pack use? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Depends on how long the run will be. If it's too long the controls might not work as well. Try getting a pair of X-Box controller extension cables, cut it in half, then determine what type of cable will be needed to extend it. I've read that they're basically USB, so this would be....shielded, dual twisted pair? As for the wall-jack. Take the controller end of the extension cable and machine a nice wall plate, then secure it with whatever tactic you feel best. I made a PS 2 dual wallplate, using a blank metal wallplate and a custom backplate sandwhiched together and lots of hot glue. Turned out perfectly, although the run was only 15'.

ItsColdInMN,
Thanks for your response. Do you know where the extension cables are available at. We did similar things with PS2; however, there were a lot of different items available to work with. The X-Box seems to be a little limited in supplies for use. If they are a USB type we have extension cable for USB that will extend its lenth to 20ft. They are amplified so I am curious if they would work. Thanks.

Give it a shot, I don't own an X-box so I'm not sure. I don't know specifically what protocol it is, but at 20' even extending a current extension cable shouldn't pose too much of a signal problem. Check at your local X-box retailer, Best Buy, Circuit City, EB, they should have something. The X-Box controller cords are like 10 feet long already, so if they don't make an extension for it, I'd be willing to bet they can't be extended. I haven't yet forced myself to get an X-box, so I'm not very familiar with it, sorry.

XBOX Controllers are not quite standard USB. They have an additional proprietary pin.

Hope that helps.

P.S. If you're not too keen on making your own, you can buy extension cables from places like ebgames.com.

This probably will not help you much right now, but this fall Logitech will be releasing wireless(2.4gHz) conrollers for the Xbox: [Link: linnpr.com]
