I have tried just about everything imaginable to get the OSD to display on Xfinity 4K X1 DVR and Apple TV 4K. Firmware, cables , different ports, lots of setting experiments, etc. TV is a Sony XBR 85X950G. Reset it recently and setup again.

Tried many different power on sequences, delays, etc.

Works fine on a Sony 4K DVD and and older Mac Mini.

Anyone run into this, maybe even with other receivers? The SC-95, despite its age does a good job of routing 4K 60hz. HDCP 2.2 with Ultra HDPass through. Not sure on the HDMI spec. Probably 2.0?

Pioneer thinks the tv may not see/recognize the OSD or it’s taking over its space in the bandwidth.

Maybe an EDID issue or CEC? Control is off on the devices as far as I can tell.

Appreciate any thoughts.

Was the Mac Mini and Sony 4K player running at 4K? 4K HDR?

I'm pretty sure you can NOT have an OSD overlay on 4K HDR content, from that receiver.

To test, you can set the AppleTV 4K to HD (1080p) output and see if the overlay comes back. Same with the Xfinity box.

Thx Brad. Mac Mini is not running in 4k. It is quite old. The Sony Bluray is fairly new and is 4k.

I'm leaning a bit more to the TV being the issue? The theory being, the OSD is injected onto the TV via the Video Out cable going from the receiver. Also, the OSD is only providing info from the receiver. Volume, mute, input, sound field, speaker settings, etc.

I've messed with all of the video settings on the Sony XBR, with no success. I am wondering if after I make one adjustment to a TV setting, I should power off the TV and devices and let them re-sync to see if it had any effect before experimenting with the next setting?

Are you thinking the receiver is not capable of doing this, in 4k HDR? It's working with the Sony 4k Bluray. Not certain if it is HDR?? I'll try changing the settings on the ATV to 1080i or p and restarting everything.

Thx Dave

The Sony 4K bluray menu is NOT in HDR. It only switches to HDR when playing 4K HDR content. Did you try playing 4K HDR content? Did the OSD show up on that?

The Apple TV 4K menu 'is' in HDR when that type of output is selected. Not sure about the Xfinity box, we still don't have 4K boxes in our area yet (that I know of).

Depending on if you actually played any 4K HDR content out of the Sony 4K bluray, this still could be an issue of the A/V receiver not being able to do an overlay on HDR content. That requires much more advanced video processing on the A/V receivers part. And that Pioneer is 7 years old. Again, I'm thinking that is beyond its capability. But further testing should reveal if this is the case or not.

Thx again, Brad. Yes, you are correct. The OSD does show on the 4K Sony DVD menu screen but does not show up when playing a 4K UHD DVD. I tried setting the ATV to 1080p and it still doesn’t display. Maybe I should have restarted everything to see if it might display the OSD but I didn’t.

Oddly enough, after that testing session I changed over to the Xfinity 4K and the OSD displayed. Have no clue what might have triggered that. It hasn’t displayed there in many months. Still working the next day. On the Xfinity box, there is a graphic which shows that UHD is selected. Within this graphic is the display and it says Undetected. I guess because it can't really see the display as it is not directly connected to the TV.

Well, a new receiver might be in my future. While talking with Pioneer a few days ago, they felt one of their latest models would likely display the OSD but also said they couldn’t say that definitively. Still too many wacky HDMI things happening.

Thx Dave
