I have opted to go the IR-controller route for my coloured LED lighting, simply so I don't suffer the fate of the software no longer being supported on my phone.
Two approaches I am looking at, is either an IR-blaster or a programmable remote that is suitable for controlling LED lighting.
Can anyone suggest anything or share how they approached this problem?

I used many RF Remotes/controller combinations. MiLight in particular. They also have a hardwired color wheel which can be wall mounted.
