I spec'd a 2022 LG OLED 77" for a customer and they approved it as long as:

"I just want to make sure those models don’t have the bright soap opera look, but instead a grainy cinematic look".

I know LG has ISF modes that would probably come closer to meeting this requirement, but curious what you all recommend after a comment like this. I've done some of the higher end Sony LED's that used to be out, and they probably had a more cinematic look IMO.

Just not sure what's out there that would best meet this comment....

Tell them to go to Best Buy to pick one out. That way it’s on them and not you.

Yep.  Their choice.

The public's mindset has become "buy a few samples and return the ones you don't like." The 'showroom' has moved to the home. I see boxes of shoes, socks, shirts, small electronics, etc. arrive a customer's location. Most of these will be returned in a day or two. There are a couple of 'warehouse' stores in my area that unload the returns. I suppose that a large operation can justify the cost of returns because there is no need for retail space and staff, but it is hard on us small guys who have no reasonable way to absorb the returns.

Did they have a plasma before? The "grainy cinematic look" comment sounds like a plasma owner.

You are doing right by specifying OLED as a replacement, although it will look its best in a darker room or if you can control light levels in the room with drapes or shades.

The Sony OLEDs are a slight step up from the LGs (IMO), with the Sony video processing making the difference, but both are at the top of the TV food chain.

I can relate.

Client had a nice LG PDP that died, and per the client, it was replace with a Sony.

Client paid too much to have the LG repaired, then paid me to come by and swap the TV's and reprogram the remotes.

Gave the Sony to her daughter. It seems there IS such a thing as too much detail an clarity. Sometimes 720P IS actually the better choice?

On most models I’ve encountered, you can change a few settings to get rid of it. I think Sony calls it Motionflow.

“Bright soap opera effect” = vivid picture mode, cool color temperature, high dynamic contrast, and motion interpolation. Basically how every set comes out the box. But, pretty much every set that has those features should have the ability to disable those features. Like, with movie/cinema mode, warm color (sometimes neutral as a compromise), disabled dynamic contrast, and disabled motion interpolation.

Let me imagine for a moment that I want to "adjust" a Samsung UN55T7000FKZA in this way. Where can I find instructions for that?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Turn off any "motion" settings to reduce soap opera effect.

The LG is exceptionally easy to turn off all artificial motion and give you a "film like" experience. The settings button will give you a side ribbon the top choice is picture mode. Select "Filmmaker Mode" .....Done. The self emitting nature of OLED also leads to a more realistic experience.

Rtings publishes the settings they use to evaluate TVs. Not your exact model but may be a starting point. [Link: rtings.com]
