Ok. This is the first one I’ve done. Based on the room layout, is it possible to do an Atmos system with only in ceiling speakers ?

You 'can', but don't.
It will sound average at best - please invest in the main 5.1 speakers and supplement with in-ceilings for surrounds / ATMOS speakers only if needed.
This industry is not getting cheaper and cheaper, we're simply convincing ourselves that we have to push the cheapest option to customers.

Thank you. This is very helpful. You referred to “ the main 5.1 Atmos speakers”. Are you referring to the fronts and centre channels?

I’ll second that. I’m also not so keen on Atmos sound bars, but they can add a little “something” in compact rooms if the area surrounding the bar is supportive.

As mentioned, you can do it. But it will not be ideal, as the intention of adding height speakers is to create a more 3D soundstage. If all of your speakers are on the same vertical plane, this effect is virtually impossible to achieve. We have done plenty of systems with in-wall fronts (behind the screen), and in-ceiling surrounds AND height speakers. This is better, but still not ideal. You really want the LCR and side and rear surround speakers to be on the same vertical plane, and use in-ceiling or angled reflective speakers to acheive the height channels. The angled speakers work fine, but placing them correctly can be challenging, so I prefer in-ceiling.

Atmos adds height channels. If all the channels are same height then the Atmos channels are pointless.

I would explain this to the client, but if they are insistent on Atmos in such a configuration sell them as many speakers as they want. You can probably replace the entire sheetrock ceiling with speakers.

Would in-walls or floor standing speakers for your main channels be the better option? Yes, but doing all in ceiling still works well.

The cool think about Atmos is that it tricks the ear into hearing the sound from wherever it needs to be. Kind of like how my old Bose sound bar tricks me into hearing sound from behind me.

It's all smoke and mirrors anyway, so install the speakers where your customer wants them and let the Atmos processor do it's thing. It's not always going to be optimal.

Customer walking over to effect speakers "I can't hear the surrounds".

Play the opening scene from the original Top Gun -- really loud. This shows the customer that the surrounds can work if the film director wants them to work.
