Hello,

I'm doing an install where the customer has an older DISH Wally Receiver?. Will need to control by IR but having trouble locating the IR sensor and so far I haven't been able to find a user manual or other documentation online. Wondering if any of the installers here might know? Here's a link to a similar product photo showing the front panel

Personally if i was having that much trouble finding the IR sensor, I’d just open it up and hot glue the emiter inside the unit.

Not a bad idea. The install is a couple hours away but I do have someone on site who could probably give it a try. Any suggestions on where to hot glue the emitter? i.e. in case its not self evident upon opening the unit?

When I’m faced with an unfamiliar unit I “xray” the unit’s front panel with my pocket flashlight — inch by inch. I can usually spot the sensor because of a change in color. This does not always work. Sony will sometimes place the sensor in the logo’s “o” or Samsung will burry it in the power/operation button. The worst case is when I must systematically block areas with a business card or by relocating the emitter while giving commands.

Tried moving emitter around while sending commands and it worked in some places and sometimes in the same places didn't work so without knowing the precise location I'm unable to say if the codes are all ok or not. I like the idea of opening the box and seeing for yourself where the sensor is. Wish I would've thought about that when I was at the site instead of wasting hours online searching for product manuals that don't exist and/or don't have the info you're looking for.

Try black electrical tape over the emitter.

I've sent you a little essay I wrote up several years ago, in case you still need some help. It covers all the details I've run into that will help you locate the IR sensor. Best of luck.

Sage advice, indeed. Thanks for sending and will give it a try.

Believe it or not, I found both links above before your post and even signed up on the satelliteguys.us website so I know you put some work into this and just want to say thanks for helping out.

I did try below the power button but there was no response. I'm pretty sure the sensor is just to the right of the last button on the front panel. That said, I'm going to proceed and open the unit to verify exactly where and eliminate, hopefully, all guess work. Black electrical tape over the emitter is a new one on me. I'll bet its a great fix but my concern would be appearance, but, if all else fails, functionality wins out over appearance, right?

Tape over the emitter limits emission angles and will allow more accurate location of the sensor. Once you have located the sensor you could probably remove the tape or replace it with paint. I use any command that works. This could be power On/Off, a menu navigation arrow, or whatever gets a quick, consistent response from the unit.

Usually, I can locate the sensor with my 'x-ray' technique. Sometimes I can shine through a plastic panel at an angle and see a shadow of the sensor. I use any command that works.

...what I learned when figuring out this stuff is that nice opaque black tape is not necessarily opaque

to IR.

"Colors" of light that we cannot see might be "seen" by IR sensors. The opposite it true, too. Black tape is not necessarily actually "black." Experiment to see how your particular circumstance works.
