You are not.

NO!
Must be BNC directly onto the cable.

So, I purchased BNC compression fittings for my RG11 and connected everything directly (direcTV client box and 3 year old Sony 4k TV)

Initially it tested fine, and as far as lag goes, it was no problem!

Knowing that HDMI likes to stop working after it hasn't been used a few days (BTW what the hell is that about), I went back to the jobsite and tested it again. The first time, the screen was blank (no "no video signal" message on the TV) but then the picture finally locked in after about 30 seconds.

I tried switching video sources and powering up and down the system to test. On one attempt it gave me a white screen with horizontal lines at the top, but I could hear audio.
On the second time, it presented me with a black screen and no audio - but I do not get a "no video signal" message, so the TV seems to think it is locked onto something.

I'm assuming this is because I am at the end of the wire length spec. By any chance can this SDI signal be amplified?

As I'm writing this, I'm thinking maybe the DirecTV box is doing that annoying thing where it defaults to 480i and maybe this unit is not spec'd for 480i.

480i was in the original spec (SMPTE 259M) for SDI. But that doesn't mean the conversion circuit for the HDMI will allow it. So a 480i signal 'could' be a problem.

Brent,
What happen to those HDMI modulator boxes? They have disappeared from your website, those things worked very well!
I notice all the generic versions of them on the internet have disappeared as well! WTF?
I found a set in South Africa for sale still. Again, these things worked great for 1080p. Why have they disappeared from the Earth?

HD-EXT3-C-B_SYSTEM is rated for 4K at the full 100 meters. 1080 shouldn't be a problem. We have had a lot of success with them, but never maxed out the distance. Have you Fluked the cable to make sure it passes spec.?

They are a lot cheaper than NVX!

Brent's SDI extender will not work at 480.  You need to de-select that as an option in the DirecTV menu and force it to use at least 720.

It is actually 480P that can not be done over SDI, but A lot of displays will not do 480i through HDMI

SDI!
Use the RG/6 with 75 Ohm BNC and go home confident.

The problem you have is not what you stated. The problem is that you're looking for a way to get an HDMI signal that far out.

Your actual problem is how to get a high resolution video signal that far out. HDMI is a 17-wire solution for short distances. SDI, which Brent suggests, is your solution.

I'm always bewildered that people want to move an HDMI signal over distances too long for HDMI transmission, and then they start talking about "HDMI over coax" or some other such thing, instead of making the conceptual switch to thinking about the original signal and asking themselves what TECHNOLOGY will deliver that RESOLUTION at that DISTANCE.

It ain't HDMI. My support for that recommendation is that Brent did not suggest an HDMI solution.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

For this job, I ended up using this:

https://www.satpro.tv/swm-30completekitdswm30swithpowersupply6splittersandjumpercables-1-1.aspx

Along with a 5 LNB unit.  Luckily, getting additional coax feeds to the multiswitch was relatively easy.

I ended up needing the existing Cat6 for network, and although there are some HDMI extenders that pass ethernet, they seem to cap out at 100 mbps.

This was also a much more straight forward solution since the DirecTV box could be located at the TV now vs an HDMI extender.

Because of the robustness of this set up I was able to place the DirecTV mini client about 360 ft from the multiswitch/NVR and it works perfectly and is just as reliable as a normal DirecTV set up.

Apparently this set up can go even further if needed.  I bought it at the above link, however not so sure about this company.  When I first called they were awesome and explained all the parts I needed.  I tried to call a couple of weeks later to get a question answered and I couldn't even get their tech support number to work - tried multiple days.

They also dropped the ball on shipping - had to call and it was still sitting in their warehouse.
