Customer is moving and asked me to throw this out there. He has a B&O wall system that he bought years ago and is wondering if it worth anything to a collector?
The unit consists of a Beogram C4500 CD player, Beomaster 4500 Tuner / Amplifer and a Beocord 4500 Tape Deck. The system is in great condition and it all works. He has the original remotes and manuals

What part of the country is he in? Also, there was a B&o forum for owners on their site, with a marketplace section. I'm not sure if it still exists.

If items are working, I imagine that anyone with a broken unit would be thrilled to contact you. I have a pile of old units in the basement. I'm not sure why I'm keeping them because no one has asked me about B&O since B&O retreated to company stores. At one point we were the local warranty station.

McIntosh is the only hifi gear that has a serious Collector following.

I have to correct you there. If you had stuffed a bunch of 1970s Pioneer, Kenwood, Marantz, or Sansui gear in to your storage unit, today you would be sitting on some gold.

Do an eBay search on Sold Items, for Pioneer SX-950, SX-1050, SX-1250, SX-1980; then Marantz 2275 and 2325; Sansui 8080DB, 9090DB, Kenwood KR-9600 for starters.

B&O doesn’t have the same rabid following, but there are some collectors out there.

I am restoring one now.

There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

I wonder if some of the lure of those 70's units is for nostalgia -- people trying to relive some of their youth. Pioneer, Kenwood and Sansui were often brought or sent home by Vietnam veterans.

There are also professional price inflators on eBay. They'll fake a sale at a very high price, then sell their 'collectors' inventory against that fake sale as a baseline for their discount.

I have a customer with a large B&O Master Link system. At one point MCL was the friendliest whole house system, but that was a long time ago. We did not install that system so I don't feel much obligation to support it, but I do need to cross swords with it occasionally -- especially since the local B&O store doesn't want to or can't support the system. Fortunately, there are some Links and controllers in our basement -- hopefully they still work if I need them. I'm sure that this customer was active in the design of the system (he's a smarter than everyone sort of guy) and does not want to give up on the system. Plus, he'd have some style issues with abandoned MCL's scattered everywhere in the walls.

I certainly acknowledge that there are folks seriously interested in vintage hifi... I dont think thats about "Collecting" though. They really think it sounds good. And maybe it does.... I'd rather have a modern amp myself.

People will buy McIntosh just because its McIntosh. It will sit on a shelf.. WIth other pieces of McIntosh gear.. that never gets played... Thats what I consider "Collecting"

People buy Marantz for exactly the same reason.

I'll take your word for that. Not something I've ever run into.

Personally, I never cared much for that vintage transistor sound. There are a few pieces, such as the Marantz 10 and Mac MR78 where you'll have an extremely tough time finding modern units with similar, stellar performance.

Marantz (old) has a huge following.
