Now that they have digital versions of the PS5 there is no real need to access the device to change disks etc..

Can a PS5 be located in a rack and distributed via HDbaseT ?

The main shortfalls to overcome i guess would be controller range and any HDbaseT latency (not normally a problem for TV, but presume it could be for games).

Does anyone have thoughts on this ?

It's the Playstation controller connection that will be the issue.
I don't know about the PS5, but the PS4 connectivity was very weak and caused us a ton of issues even with racks in the back of the room.

Actually the HDBaseT connection will be an issue too. One of the big upgrades of the new consoles is the HDMI 2.1 features. VRR, ALLM, 4K 120Hz, etc...
The PS5 is currently running 32GBps and the XBOX 40GBps.
I don't believe we still have any HDBaseT copper solution that can do this. Anything you use (copper based) is going to be compressed and could have latency issues for gamers.
Can you run fiber? Or is the wiring already fixed? How far is the run going to be?

And then like mentioned above, the controller connectivity is always fun.

I always put game systems in the room, with direct connectivity to the AVR or display. This is only going to become more common as not just game consoles, but source components in general, continue to outpace the development of distribution hardware.

Don’t some use cameras connected to the console?
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

they arent running that unless they are on a TV that can take it in. So what it is running, and what it can run are 2 very different things.

I dont believe there are even any Matrix switches that do over 18Gbs HDMI either. So thats a consideration for a centralized system as well.

I've abandoned even the thought of installing video distribution systems or even HDMI extenders. I'm trying to convince customer to keep video sources close to TVs. Costs less and no headaches with extenders not working. Big fan of optical HDMI cabler through conduit when there is a longish run. Soon the game systems and TV are upgrading to 8K. Even surround receivers seem to be taking long keeping up with that.

That goes without saying.

I don't know how many people on here are dedicated console gamers...

But if a PS5 / XBox One X is in a rack, how to I connect a decent wireless headset to it? My headset connects to the XBox via USB and has decent range - but any echo / delay is HATED by anyone else in party chat.

Controller drops or lag are also painful as all hell.

Keep the console local to the TV, if they want a streaming box to serve the whole home, look outside of consoles.
This industry is not getting cheaper and cheaper, we're simply convincing ourselves that we have to push the cheapest option to customers.
