Hi there, I was looking at AVR options for a customer who just got a PS5 and Samsung Q80 TV. Can any or the sub $1000 receivers from Yamaha, Denon or Sony handle the best video options from the PS5? I know the TV can do 4K 120 fps. Is there anything else I'm missing?

Not yet I don't think. The Yamaha RXV4a and 6a, and RXA2a are "shipping", but I think most of the features are to be enabled by a firmware update. I believe that includes 4k120, vrr, allm, etc. There was also a bug found with the receivers during initial testing that might make it a problem even after the update. Yamaha suggested that for the time being, connect PS5 or Xbox Series X directly to the TV, then use eARC to return audio to the AVR.

I think Marantz and Denon have some models announced but not sure they are available yet. Sony has not had a new AVR for a couple of years now and rumors are floating around that they may be exiting, at least partially, the AV market. Not sure what that actually means, but something to consider.

Honestly, if I were getting a new console and a new TV, I might wait until the next round of AVRs.

2020 Marantz and Denon receivers technically have an 8k input.... Unfortunatly, There is a bug in the HDMI chip. They dont work right. You get a black screen. They do not think it can be corrected with firmware. I have no idea if Marantz and denon plan to do anything about it at this point.
As mentioned above. Best to wait you are actually using 18Gbs+

The Denon + Marantz receivers have reportedly patched their AVR's via firmware to run 4K / 120. However, it's only on the PS5, not the XBox Series X (incidentally the PS5 and Denon's both share the same HDMI chipset manufacturer which explains this).

The HDMI 2.1 standard for AVR's was only actually released for testing in December... so to release an AVR prior to that and say it's READY is either very confident or freaking idiotic from Sound United! I know Yamaha never said there's would be ready out of the box in order to let users know what to expect... however S.United were desperate to be first and scream from the top of their marketing mountain about it.

Update took care of a problem child for us this morning, was grateful despite being generally PO’d about this. Think you hit the nail on the head.
