So, as I was traveling along in the saga with my new components, I discovered that the Apple TV has some setup screens, for instance for overscan.

At one point I had the thing "test" the HDMI cable. The screen went mostly white with a slight bluish tinge, but to the left of center there was a slightly gray blue area with fuzzy edges and rounded corners. OBVIOUSLY a panel of LEDs in the TV wasn't working right! Piece of crap. I also noticed lack of uniform color in other places on the screen.

Then the thing quit testing the cable and told e the connection looks good. The overall screen color was bluish and that same area was a darker blue than the rest.

I'd like to stop here.

I wanted to stop to here theories and stuff, but that's not all.

On a CBS Network promo with the words "Let's Watch, the white background was similarly less than perfect but the blue square was gone. Then a day later the STATION 19 ID had about the best white I've ever seen that set do.

So... the Apple TV tells a TV screen to turn on full except for a 12" square over to the left? Doesn't figure!

What's happenin'?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Speculating: Driving the display hard altered its temperature and this altered the color balance slightly. Also, the bright white may have left an after image in your eyes. In the next day all of this was gone.

Read the bold part and tell us who you are and what you did with Ernie.

Since you mentioned theories, this must include conspiracy theories- that square is for the PIP from the camera that's watching every move you make. It's part of the TV, but the video won't show on YOUR TV, just the one that receives the surveillance video.

Don't try to stop it- they know, man! They know!

Ernie,
It sounds like you do not own a single piece of video test equipment. How, how can you honestly work on customer's systems, when you are just as blind as they are trying to troubleshoot things.

At the very least, you can put a test pattern app on your phone or tablet and 'cast' or 'airplay' it to a device (Chromecast or AppleTV).

A step up would be to use a bluray player or 4K bluray player with test discs (there are dozens available) and hook to a display.

Another step up would be to use an actual pattern generator. There are cheap Chinese ones on Amazon.com for $300-$600.

If you really want to go pro, buy an actual professional test pattern generator. I like the Murideo SIX-G at $2500.

Of course you will need to know how to actually use the test patterns as well. And you would need to know what all the controls on the video display actually do. I'm not convinced that you do.

The Spears & Munsell disc is a good place to start. Is it available at higher resolution?

Yes, they have a 4K HDR disc available. I have it.
There are also a couple more 4K HDR discs available.

I also have the Diversified Video Solutions (DVS) test suite. I paid over $100 for that, included downloads and discs for all the test patterns and material.
The Spears & Munsil disc came out right after I purchased that. The DVS suite is extremely comprehensive, but the S&M disc has everything anyone would need at a fraction of the cost ($39.99).
