Never really thought about it, but can you see light from the laser in a DVD or CD player?

Not gong to look directly at it of course, but would there be some reflected light to be seen?

Just kind of curious....

The lens has a very short focal point and not much light leaks out from under the head assembly while covered by a disc. If you are servicing a unit with an empty tray, you may be able to see some light as the player attempts to focus on a disc. You'll likely be quite far from the focal point, but I don't recommend viewing the beam on axis. There is no danger that you'll burn a track on the ceiling.

Be aware that the light you see might not be the strongest wavelength coming out of the laser. Your eyes can be damaged by light outside the visible spectrum.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I'm just hoping to be able to see if the laser is actually working.

This is on one of the old Sony 400 disc mega changers that I'm trying to save.

As it is now it will power up, load a disc, but then "disc is dirty" or "cannot read disc" comes up in the display.

I recently added new drive belts as the old ones were an issue but don't want to buy a new laser assembly if the one in it is still good, as that is like a government project where they keep throwing money at it and hope it works...

I don't recall if they emit any visible radiation, most do. If you cannot see the lens, perhaps sliding a piece of paper over the lens will allow you to see something. Most of the heads that I've seen will emit a quiet "click" as they attempt to focus on an empty tray.

It’s a reddish look.

Normally when you close the disc drawer, with no disc you will see the lens go up and down three or four times as it tries to focus on the disc. A little bit of light is visible. Don’t stare it down to verify it though.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

Put a piece of white paper over the lens- you should see a red dot.
