Anyone ever used something like this with any luck?

I have a need for more digital inputs than I have available on the old AVR and would like to extend its life for a bit longer...

It will probably work just fine.

I am curious now what receiver you are using and/or how many digital audio sources you have. I am not sure what constitutes an "old" receiver to you. But in my mind, I am thinking 15-25 years old. Most receivers I remember from that era had gazillions of digital inputs. LOL

Yes, but the "old" receivers had a gazillion component or composite video ports and not many HDMI. (ARC, what's that, some sort of special effect or a massive failure?) In my experience the new receivers don't have many Toslink in/out, they are almost exclusively HDMI.

i use this on soundbars to expand the input capabilities.

learning the codes was simple.  i've got a driver if you do URC Total Control.

Looks lie that will do the trick.

The AVR I am using has 2 toslink and 1 coax. I have 4 sources with toslink, and 2 with coax or toslink..

Unless I want to use LR RCA's I need the switch.

Years ago I handled this situation, though not conveniently, with an optical audio splitter connected backwards. Yes, really. It was for temporary use so the way it worked wasn't much of a drawback.

The splitter must be a totally passive unit.

You connect two optical sources to the splitter outputs. You then run from the splitter input to the amp. That's right, it's backwards.

The key is that whichever optical source is not being used must be powered down. No output. Doesn't look red when you look at it.

If one unit has the audio you want but the other unit has any light at all, the signal will be messed up.

Enjoy or discard.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Many years ago I have done similar things, but in this case it won't work.

This company makes some quality products but not as inexpensive as Amazon.
