Cedia doesn’t seem to bring anything to the table that makes my business better or easier to manage. Before you flame I’m speaking for myself as a one man operator. In my opinion an organization such as this needs to bring something large like a universal low voltage certification that allows a contractor like me to work on low voltage in any community in my state. Tackling the unions and electricians is too large a task for small operators like me so if an organization such as Cedia made this happen I would see value in the membership. I don’t need them for day to day business, lead generation, or training. They have great resources for those that are new to the business but the membership becomes very stale within a few years. I know there are people that spend big lobby money to keep things locked up so it’s not a small feat but this has value to an established person or company. I spent days (and tried to get help as a Cedia member) trying to get a permit for low voltage in unincorporated Cook County which is controlled by the city of Chicago. The only way to realistically get one is to involve the site electrician and work out a deal to work under his permit. Anyway in short, I can’t justify a paid membership to an organization that doesn’t have big solutions.

Agreed

I see you post this all the time. What do you think CEDIA should be doing that they aren't doing?

My biggest gripe with them is not holding manufacturers accountable for the crap product they put out. To be a Cedia certified manufacturer they should have to continually prove that their crap will work, and ensure updates won’t break integration. Also I would like to see them ensure products don’t get released before they are ready.

Above all I would love to see a movement that makes these manufacturers pay for our time to fix THEIR products and issues. This is common in the HVAC/Marine industry.

Until we as an industry hold these manufacturers feet to the flame or an organization that “has our back” things will continually deteriorate.

I like your sentiment, but I never thought the above had anything to do with CEDIA. I think that would be up to the CTA. (but what the hell do I know)

I always thought of CEDIA as more of a Chamber of Commerce for the custom AV world. I think they lobby as well, but not sure if that's still accurate.

They never have. The badge for a manufacturer is literally “pay x and get the badge) but that’s what I’m saying, do something so that badge means something.

AVIXA aka Infocomm, is by far a more prominent group. At least their certifications are requested and respected within the ProAV/Commercial realm.

A lot of the architects around me doing AV system design for bidding request that the bidders have at least a CTS certification.

How do i apply for CEDIA president? Or is it like an election? What are the two parties for the system?

You’re not qualified. You’ve actually worked in the custom integration field.
