After some mysterious troubleshooting* with Tony at Yamaha, he led me to see that the problem only occurred when the receiver was connected to my LGTV. I carry around a 13" TV with HDMI inputs for CCTV camera work and other monitoring, and the Yamaha receiver worked PERFECTLY with that.

So I had to look at the TV settings and turned off Deep Color. You know, just like the folks at remotecentral warn you about! It's a new TV and I had naively turned on Deep Color. It was quite a shock to turn off a detail of the way the image is shown, and then have the sound come on!

*After being on hold for about 90 minutes while they worked their way through twenty other installers on hold

Warned about- turning off Deep Color was discussed years ago.

Yes, it was discussed, and I apparently missed the complicated ways in which it could manifest.

I got proper audio out of HDMI 1 OUT when I had turned on HDMI OUT 1 and HDMI OUT 2. I got no audio in some circumstances, which lines up with Deep Color problems I had heard of. But getting no picture, or getting picture on output 1 only when output 2 was connected to a TV, which then only got audio OR video... that all was just too squirrely to imagine that it was a TV adjustment problem.

Thanks for following along. I've learned that if I want to mess with Deep Color, to get the entire system set up and working before playing with it.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
