My wife likes using the Sonos app on phone/tablet better than the keypads... My preference, but drywall repair is an issue for me.

I know they did not impress you, but if the Sonos app will be primary, and you don’t want sheetrock repair, I’d still use the Lutron Picos.
They are cheap. They do fine on volume, play/pause, and skip for those rare times you don’t have a phone nearby. And they will nicely cover the hole in the wall.

I need to get new sanding pads for my festool sander than junior coerced me into getting. It connects to a vacuum and definitely makes the job a bit better. My biggest issue with doing them at clients houses is that most of my jobs are small one day deals, and drywall repair will require multiple trips in most cases. There is quick drying mud, but I haven't worked with it to know how feasible it is to get any patches down in a day. The other issue is it still would require paint. One thing I hate more than patchwork is paint, and I am definitely not painting a clients house. I am an AV guy, not a painter.

I can do many things, but drywall is not on that list. Subs will giggle and roll their eyes after watching me struggle.
Quick set mud is handy for small patch jobs once you get used to working in small batches. Note that quick set is much harder to sand. It's best to take extra care while applying. Don't let tools sit around with uncured mud on them because once it cures, it is (literally) hard to deal with.
I've watched contractors apply mud over tape almost as fast as they can walk and almost no sanding is needed. This is not my skill.

Wall-mount tablet could cover a hole.
8" Android + Vidabox + POE runs about $300/zone. Fire tablets are even cheaper, and there are cheaper mounts.
iPad mini + iPort Launch/Luxe + POE is a lot more, and may require drywall repair anyway, for the minimalist look.
