Another aspect of ‘rocks’ is their location. While one would not recommend hiding bookshelf speakers under the desk (I’ve even seen them under the sofa or bed) in order to make them invisible, rocks are often hidden behind the bushes. In my experience ‘planter’ speakers tend to be more favorably located.

From a tech point of you, what is the issue? It is a sealed cabinet, with interactions between the resonant frequency of the woofer and the volume of the cabinet. Like a bookshelf speaker with an odd shape. No reason it could not sound just fine.

If the fact that it looks like a plastic rock irritates you, I can understand that. That does not mean it cannot be made to sound decent.

There's a lot of grill blocking the sound on most rock speakers. I have heard very few that impressed me, so I haven't checked them out in quite a while. I prefer the Malibu lighting-style with the amp/sub/DSP setup.
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

If you must have dinosaur poop-looking speakers, Rockustics is the way to go, imo.
