Have used StereoStone, Rockustics, TIC (bleah) but have settled on Episode the last few years.

I have a client who is interested in something much better, or perhaps from a better known manufacturer. Do you have any recommendations?

I've used the 8 inch Sonance rocks on the last couple of jobs and been pretty happy with them.

Ed will be known as the Tiger Woods of the integration business, followed closely with the renaming of his company to "Hotties A/V". The tag line will be "We like big racks and tight holes"...

Why rocks? Recently I've been using NEAR LB8's on their ground-mounted method, hidden behind the plants. In the past I had a metal fab guy build me a "T" stake with holes for the mounting bracket points and used big Sonance Mariners, Paradigm Stylus', or even Niles OS8 back in the day.

Near gets my vote for durability and superb sound. They had inground, but not rock speakers, and I hated giving them back after I wrote a review. Best sounding outdoor speakers I've heard....

Agreed 3P, I have never seen a rock speaker that didnt look like a fake, plastic rock that made sound.

Is "really good rock speakers" similar to 'really good S-video cables'?
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

From a tech point of you, what is the issue? It is a sealed cabinet, with interactions between the resonant frequency of the woofer and the volume of the cabinet. Like a bookshelf speaker with an odd shape. No reason it could not sound just fine.

If the fact that it looks like a plastic rock irritates you, I can understand that. That does not mean it cannot be made to sound decent.

That's true, there is no reason why it couldn't sound good...it's just that I don't think any of the manufacturers of rock-looking speakers put any effort into making them sound any more than OK.

Tell that to StereoStone, Rockustics, where that’s all they do... they would probably give you a potent cross-eyed look, like, are you serious?

I don't think some of these people have ever really seen a StereoStone or Rockustics product.
"Cheap looking plastic rock" is the last thing you would be saying.
Sound quality... meh, it is what it is.

I just wouldn't want to use any of those actual cheap plastic looking rock speakers. They neither sound any good, nor do they usually last.

Funny, I just replaced a set of rocks in someone’s backyard that were still working from 15 years ago. I guess your mileage may vary.

Anyway, I didn’t mean for it to turn into a rock speakers good or bad thread. I do appreciate the recommendation on the Near speakers.
