Hey, this is a little off topic. I have a standard philips VR610- a VCR. For some reason the remote has stopped responding. Whenever I press a button the VCR display just spits 'VCR1' back at me. It isn't a univerisal remote or anything, it is the one that came with the machine.
Any idea what is wrong?

I have never heard of anything like that, but I am willing to take a stab at it after many years' experience to the wild and wacky world of engineers who think they are doing something both sensible and easy to understand but who manage to create devices that defy human sense.
Maybe the VCR and the remote can be set to two different codes so that two of them can be used in the same room with no interference; maybe your VCR was set at the factory to "VCR1;" maybe your remote was, too, but somehow got changed to the "VCR2" setting; maybe the engineers at Philips thought that a "VCR1" VCR should respond with a "VCR1" display whenever it received a "VCR2" code, sort of as an explanation of why the VCR is not responding to the remote.
Maybe.

A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything. "The biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place." -- G. “Bernie” Shaw |
