You buy yourself a home and its time to wire the network. You have thousands of feet of Cat5 sitting there free for the use.
Do you use it, or shit can it and buy Cat6 or better.

I'm using minimum Cat6 is my own home. Save the Cat5 for a cheap builder track home.

How big is this house, and what sort of stuff do you want in it?

If it was 5e and I was penny pinching, I’d consider it. Especially if they are short runs. You can get Gig speed over 5e over short distances.

But I did the same as everyone else and ran 6 everywhere. Only fiber links are out to my pools mechanical area outside and interconnects between switches.

Cat 6 it is then.
The house is a little over 3k square feet over 3 levels. We have all the usual stuff. We currently have cut the cable (trying to get the wife to go for ota :( ) and are using youtube tv at the moment so planning on 10 locations plus 3 wifi points.

Well this isn't any fun if we all say the same thing, so...

From the netflix site:

"0.5 Megabits per second - Required broadband connection speed
1.5 Megabits per second - Recommended broadband connection speed
3.0 Megabits per second - Recommended for SD quality
5.0 Megabits per second - Recommended for HD quality
25 Megabits per second - Recommended for Ultra HD quality"

I don't take my work home with me - AT ALL. I don't even have internet at my place, so when I wanted to watch Stranger Things, I tethered my crappy TCL TV to my phone and watched all 2 (or 3?) seasons that way. It worked. Pretty well, too, and according to the chart, it makes sense.

I'm sure you're using a variety of services, not just Netflix, so the demands will vary, but you're talking about running this to EVERY location. Cat5e, by the specs, will handle 1GB up to 300', so the wire isn't even *close* to being the limiting factor.

And no, I'm to saying you should be selling this; you asked about your own house, and you have the wire.

Okeedoke, flame suit on!

You never did any network wiring before CAT6 became available?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

How old are you? Will you outlive Cat5e? Are you going to start working for the NSA from home and require huge servers everywhere? No? Use the Cat5e.

From somewhere on the internet, at the other end of a google stick I shook a moment ago:

2002

The Cat 6 standard was first released in 2002 as part of the Telecommunications Industry Association's TIA/EIA-568-B. 2-1 document specification.

That doesn't mention when it became available, just that the spec was released.

Then there's this,

Is CAT-7 real?

Followed by [Link: loxone.com]:

4 Simple Reasons Why Choosing CAT 7 Cable Really Pays Off

A Category 7 cable, more commonly known as a CAT 7 or Cat-7 cable, is used for the cabling infrastructure of Gigabit Ethernet. A CAT 7 cable offers performance of up to 600MHz. Put simply, a CAT 7 cable is what we recommend you use when wiring your smart home! Once you’ve wired your smart home, you can check out some of our favorite home automation ideas!

this was definitely an advertisement....

most of the world is on cat5. They will not be ripping it out and replacing it for the most part. Cat5 works and works fine. Its your money, your call but the cat5 will work just fine.

Personally, cat is cheap so i would use cat6 lol. but would never regret using cat 5.
