Could anyone recommend a quiet 48 port gigabit smart managed POE switch ?

I have use lots of netgear ones in the past but the fans in them are extremely noisy.

All 48 port poe models will have fans in them. There's a good chance the heat will need to be dissipated, hence why they have fans.

If you're technically inclined, you could buy better fans to replace the stock ones.

If you care to install and support unifi, I’d suggest 2x 24 port 250 watt and swap out the fans for quieter models. I’ve swapped out fans on the Pro4 router and the sound level drops considerably with the aftermarket fans.

PoE switches dump considerably more heat than regular switches. Do you need PoE on all ports? If not, you could use a smaller PoE switch to support the PoE devices and cut down on total heat generation.

Also, the fans are often variable speed. If you can create better cooling for the whole enclosure, the fans may run at a quieter speed.

I had an interesting experience with a Ubiquiti PoE switch. I wanted to mount it under a shelf, in a cabinet. Cabling was easier if I mounted the switch upside down. The switch was a screamer and could be heard on the entire first floor. On a hunch I remounted the switch, mumbling about the difficult cable access, but the switch was much, much quieter. Depending on overall environment temperature, the fans did not run at all.

I have a customer who is a fan freak and has scattered a zillion external fans around his space, pointed at equipment. Units that typically run uncomfortably hot to touch, are now nearly room temperature.

I would point out that moving air creates noise. And if you want electronics to last and not fail prematurely, you need to move a lot of air over hotspots. Putting in a smaller fan or quieter fan? If it means reduced airflow, may or may not be advisable. The fan is making noise because it is moving air rapidly over very hot electronic spots. Creating the capacity to power multiple devices means a power supply that generates some heat.

The luxul 5248P has a squirrel style fan so it moves a ton of air with out making much fan noise.

That is great, until the squirrels get tired!

Aren't the new Unifi POE Gen2 switches fanless?

Well, I don't know anyone that likes 'em.

I think it's more that Unifi is cheap and didn't want to spend extra $$ per unit on a quality part. I've got these in my Pro4 and it runs quieter and cooler

Why not a regular non-PoE switch and use a multiport PoE injector?

If you don't need all 48 ports as poe, you could use injectors and a non poe switch. The guys at Poetexas.com make a bunch of single and multiport ones. We've used them in conference room av racks very successfully for power on HDBASE-T links. Tons of good info about poe on their site and they also super helpful at determining exactly what you need. I’m a network engineer and I was still surprised at how many different types of POE there actually are!

I know it's one of those holy grail things, but here goes :-)

I have a quiet office environment with a wall mount cabinet. This morning I took out the fanless 16 port gigabit switch and popped in a Dell PowerConnect 2748.

It seems the price of a few more ports is having a JetRanger hovering in the office!

I know the natural retreat is to go and get another fanless 16 port switch and see if I can find space in the box, but 1U was all I really wanted to fill without things getting messy.

I've looked into fan replacement, but there aren't any that can shift 10.1cfm and be lower revving.

Does anyone have any recommendations for quieter 48 port switches?
