So,

Here it my XX birthday, and I go to use my old DC989 hammer drill, only to find that two of my DeWalt 18V XRP batteries are done in.

Go to Googling and I find that DeWalt doesn't make them any longer, and the only replacements are the Chinese things that are usually of questionable quality.

Screw it. At least they are cheap.

P.S. This drill IS older than some of you guys. Not many, but some...LOL

DeWalt makes an 18v to 20v adapter.

Maybe this is a viable approach.

I replaced an 18V unit that simply wore out with a 20V unit. The 20V unit is much better. I don't know what shape your drill is in or if there are any other 18V units in your collection, however, given the cost of the adapter and new batteries it might be better overall to update. If your drill is in decent shape, you could probably sell it online and get a few dollars back.

That's fine, but another rabbit hole.

Then the chargers I have will become useless, and I'll not only need to buy the adapters and batteries, but replace my chargers.

Might as well buy all new kits in that case, and that doesn't make sense as I have the sawzall, flashlight, side grinder, circular saw, two drills, jigsaw, and a right angle drill.

Plus I would be a little concerned with running 20v on n item designed for 18v..

Adapters will charge 20v in 18v chargers. Also check out this link on 20v marketing.

Look on ebay- there's a company that sells replacement cells for discontinued batteries. I bought a couple for my Milwaukee NiCd hammer drills and they work great- I unscrewed the shell,. removed the old cells & installed the new ones. I have at least two years with them and no problems- not even $40 for each set.

Just replace it all you old fart. I replace my 18v setup with 20v at Xmas time and it's been great. I bought a kit that had a mix of the XR stuff and regular. The regular stuff is fine for my use as the XR stuff is the heavier duty stuff. Was only around $500 and came with everything my 18v stuff had. It also came with a BT radio. Since then I added a fan that works on battery or power cord, and a weed whacker for home. Added a total of 3 5AH batteries, mainly for the weed whacker but keep one on the van. The tools are lighter, batteries last longer and they have a meter on them to gauge charge level.

+1 on the fan.

I have the 20v 18ga nailer (awesome) the romex stapler (even more awesome) the 20v SDS rotary hammer and then the hammer drill and impact driver And the circular saw. They drills are relegated to really shitty work like muddy crawling or work where I may loose them.

There is a distinct difference though between festool and DeWalt, especially in the hammer drills. I don’t use an SDS drill all that often so couldn’t justify the cost for one, and I really wanted the stapler and nailer.

I’m not joking guys, that stapler is worth it’s weight in gold and then some!
