Has anyone used the new HDTV over CAT5 products such as the Gefen HDTV HDMI CAT5 extender unit? I also know that Audio Autority showed their new video over CAT5 system at CES. Does anyone use these as a solution to wholehouse video from like a DVD or multiple STB's in a control room in the basement? If so, is there control built into some of these boxes, or do you run a another CAT5 for control? Thanks.

We have the audioauthority Piece in the showroom running 16 tv's from a single HD sat. It has worked out quite well. I don't recall the model #, Its been a couple years since I put it in. I'll have to look and see if it also does control ( I'm not using it if it does).

My current book of choice is written by a guy with LOTS of experience at Belden. It is about wiring, written for installers of all types of equipment.

He mentions one demo where he ran video through 1700 (one thousand, seven hundred) feet of CAT5, converting it back and forth from CAT5 to RG59 several times, and nobody really believed it was CAT5. The wire was not spooled up, either: it ran all over the building. They had to physically disconnect the CAT5 to believe that they were watching video over CAT5!

In another place, he mentions that there will often be objections to using CAT5 because the wire is too cheap.

This exposes total irrationality, and I am sure most of us have it, about the feasability and performance of video of any sort over CAT5. Look up the specs of the units you are thinking of, and believe it despite the hold that MONSTER has on your imagination!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Mike, we all know Crestron has been successful using cat5 wire to send HD video around a home. I have used the equipment from Audio Control successfully a few times in the past few months. Now its the only way I'll distribute HD or even DVD around a home. Their new piece splits the component signal into three separate cat5 outputs and they include a coax digital audio connection as well. Plus, its available through distribution (not sure if Geffen or Audio Authority is).
